DVD Recorders & High Def TV

 Folks

Question from a near techno-numpty. DVD player has just packed up and am now considering a DVD recorder. However read somewhere that current DVD recorders will not be able to record high defintion signals. Assuming that I may wish to move to HD TV in the future does that mean that my DVD recorder will be redundant and I won't be able to record TV programmes or will I still be able to record TV but at a lower quality. If the former I assume my best plan is just to get another cheap DVD player and wait for HD DVD recorders to hit the market.

Thoughts?? and if anyones got any "do's and don'ts" in the DVD recorder selection I'd be really grateful.

Thanks all

HD DVD Recorders wont be availible for the public at the moment. If they were, they would be over £1k. HD DVD PLAYER is £500+ (there are some that say HD but are not true HD)

If you use a DVD Recorder as normal, it will record in a high quality SD format. You wont notice much difference between SD and the dvd but it will be higher but not as high as HD.

    Hope this helps m8 :)

    Hi there,

Just bought my first dvd recorder a panasonic es10 £119.99 local store Latest I believe is the es15 and es20, and it is brilliant. Stay clear of anything cheaper than that. I would never go back to using vcr tapes again for recording once you get used to having a dvd recorder.

advantages of the panasonic dvd recorder

1 cheap price 2 no hard disk but that dont matter as you can use dvd-r (rewritable which can hold up to 8 hours recording each) 3 supports dvd-ram, a brillliant format which allows you to record a program whilst looking at an earlier recording on same disk at same time ie.simultaneous play and record. reusable disks as well 5 for a tenner at pcworld, only disadvantage of ram disks is cant be played on other players. 4 once you have recorded a number of programs you press direct navigator button on dvd remote and every title that you have recorded shows on a little square on tv screen. How easy is that! no more searching like old vcr tape.5 Use your sky box to control the dvd recorder and record programs for you. (hook a scart from av2 in recorder to vcr in digital box, go into tv guide in sky box press red on sky remote to autoview programs, switch sky box off then press ext link on dvd recorder remote)

I just love the panasonic thingy, but you probably can get similar with a few other well known brands. Works out a lot cheaper if you get a recorder without a hard disk.

    regards
