Statemented child (benefits)

Hi there. I don't really know where to go for advice, so I'll start my quest on here
I have a child who was statemented last August. I am a single parent, and due to this statement (and surrounding problems) I've had to give up work.
I was told today, that I may be eligible for extra benefits. Is this the case? If so, what benefits am I entitled to?
Thanks again, in advance

You will not be eligible for extra benefits simply because your child has been statemented. However, the fact that your child has been statemented may be regarded as evidence that your child has special needs regarding care, supervision and possibly mobility which may qualify you for Disability Living Allowance
Making a claim for DLA is not the simple process The Daily Mail enjoys promulgating. If you are unfamiliar with the process it would be worth your while downloading a claim form from the first link and completing it with a copy of the Benefitsand Work DLA claim guides in front of you.
When you have completed your practice form take this to your local Welfare Rights office See Benefitsand work Getting help with your benefits guide who will be able to check your prepared answers through and suggest areas where you haven't provided appropriate detail. Many WRO's are overwhelmed with the amount of work they are required to do so checking through a prepared form should be quicker then doing a whole new claim.
There is a self-assessment test here and here and more details of DLA CHILD claim criteria here at benefitsnow
If you could post back with information relating to the specific condition your child has been diagnosed with then more specific advice regarding claims with that disability might be available.
You should also be aware that should your child be awarded DLA care at middle or high rate you will be able to claim Carer's Allowance so having read the DLA mid/high care criteria and considered if these might be appropriate, it would be worth your while claiming CA at the same time as you claim DLA. The CA claim will be initially rejected (because there will be no DLA claim to base it on) but as soon as the DLA award comes through you can reapply for CA and have it backdated to the initial award.
Requesting DLA & Carer's Allowance claim forms from the Benefit Enquiry Line Phone 0800 88 22 00 Textphone 0800 24 33 55 Free will mean they send you a dated form (Unlike the downloaded practice form mentioned earlier) which you will have time to complete after you've checked your answers at the WRO. Your DLA claim will then run from the date of request of claim form rather than the date of receipt of claim form which may gain you several weeks DLA & CA.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

i looked into this when my boy was statemented for moderate developmental delay. he needed the statement before going to a pre-school nursery. i got free nappies, i don't know if this is of any use to you. you can't get them until the child's 3rd birthday and there has to be a 'special needs' reason, you can't get them for every 3 year old that's not toilet trained. they gave me half of my disposable nappy requirement, i had to pick them up every 2 weeks from the clinic.
the staff at the child development centre looked into DLA for me but decided we didn't qualify. it's always worth a try though, children don't get statemented willy nilly.52% tight0
