Hi

Were going away to Prague in a week or so for four nights, staying near Wencelas Square, so I'm pretty sure were near the centre.

We know about the Christmas Markets and the River Cruise, but can anyone else suggest things to do there?
Also are things cheaper there than in Ireland/England?

Charles Bridge was still a building site recently. They are refurbishing it so it is only about half-width. Still plenty of people around though!

There are lots of things to see, and the best way is by tram. Get a pass (1 or 3 day) at the kiosk at the airport and you can include your airport transfers, using the 100 or 119 bus to where it meets the Metro. You only need to validate the ticket the first time you use it, it is valid on all buses, trams and Metros, and the system does not have barriers.

http://www.myczechrepublic.com/prague/transportation.html Take a look at the system here, it is easy to use, convenient, frequent and cheap.

The castle is worth a visit. Approach it on the 22 tram to the Pohorelec stop, then walk - it's downhill. Approaching from the city is a very long, steep slog! Other places to see are the Old Town square and Petrin. Just strolling around the city is fascinating. Sadly, Wenceslas Square is probably the least impressive part - it's a wide street rather than a square and full of tacky, overpriced bars and restaurants.

The pubs in Prague are a joy! The beer is superb, and many do really decent food. Czech food is hearty, filling and ideal for winter. Stick to Czech beer as it's much cheaper. Don't forget to try the dark as well as the light beer.

http://www.praguepubs.co.uk/ Take a look at this site for some pubs.

There is also plenty of choice as far as food is concerned. Pizzas (and Italian in general) are good and cheaper than here. We have also, on our several visits, tried Mexican and Greek places among others.

I did a tour with the castle, river cruise and astronomical clock.
Oh you don't get clubcard points in the Tesco's, but may be worth a trip still for some food.

I'd also recommend the praguepubs website - some execellent recommendations on there.

One other thing i would recommend is walking up into the zizkhov and vinorhady districts which are just up from wencelas square for a less touristy view of prague. there are some good restaurants and bars in those area's but they are local places and not tourist traps.

Whilst you are in the area also take a trip up the TV Tower for excellent views of the city. There is a restaurant at the top where you can get a drink or a full meal. You can also admire the rather strange babies there too.

The Charles Bridge will be under reconstruction for quite some time yet but it is still worth a visit and a good way to get across the river. Prague is very accessible on foot but take comfortable shoes as there are a lot of cobbles.

Caffreys is right on Old Town Square but personally I would never go to any of the Irish bars. They are overpriced and full of Brits - if that's what you want why not just stay home? Come on mate - live dangerously!!!

Czech food tends to be very meat orientated and they do love their dumplings! However, if you move away from the main tourist drag there are lot of restaurants and cafes at reasonable prices. If you are staying near Wenscelas, you could try Kivadlo which is close to Rocky O'Reillys. The food is excellent and cheap.

My husband works in Prague and we have a home there. I have spent a lot of time there over the last 8 years but still love going.

each time i read this i think of something new.

I do NOT recommend the 'midget and monkey' show unless you are slightly disturbed or sexual perverted. If you are then feel free to make enquiries!
