How to load MS Office onto a netbook?

My friend has been given a netbook for her birthday by her son. She wants to load MS Office onto it, but how do we do this as there is no facility for a CD?

Please help as she is so looking forward to writing letters!

You can also do it via a network! I did it via my networked desktop! But I put Open Office on mine!

Copy the contents of the CD on to a USB stick and install from that.

I assume you have the 160GB Hard drive version. Windows and Office would take up alot of space on a 8GB solid drive. Open office is free, works very similar to Ofiice and you can save documents in MS office format.

But either install via a network or use an external USB CD/DVD drive.

Most versions of Office will fit on a simple SD Card (which most netbooks have fitted as standard)

Do you have a memory card in a Digital Camera or something you can use to move the contents of the Office CD across to the netbook?

4Gb SDHC Cards are only about £6

Smaller capacities of simple SD are cheaper

Also, OpenOffice is downloadable from the internet.

There was a thread recently on this topic - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2096551

You have a few option ...

Firstly, I take it you have a legitimate copy, with a key ;) ?

What version is it ? You can get a copy of Office 2007 software from Microsoft, if you have a key - http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/HA103621001033.aspx

Otherwise, if you already have the CD, you can:
    1) Copy the contents to a USB drive / SD card, and install from there
    2) Connect an external CD/DVD drive
    3) Network your netbook to an existing laptop / dektop, and 'share' the CD drive from one of them across the network.

The thread I have linked lo above talks about all these option.
  • Thank you everyone. I didn't know that I could copy Office to a USB/SD card. I'll give it a go. I haven't got an external CD drive.
I do have legit copies of Office which I no longer use - 2000 and 2003, so will be giving her one of those. She only wants Word, so not too much space required, even though her netbook has 160Gb, she'll need the space as she gets more involved with everything she can do with it! It's her first ever computer and she is learning her way around it mega fast. Bet she asks her son for an upgrade for her next birthday lol.

I've also got a netbook (Samsung NC10) with a 160GB drive. It is plenty of space, so you can 'afford' to install the full office package, and not just Word by itself. You will have LOADS of space left for music, pictures etc.
  • Download Office 2010 (beta) for free from Microsoft.

    or

Home network available - ??. Use your desktop (or laptop) PC optical drive. Just share the DVD drive and use a feature called "mapping". In windows explorer look for Map a Network Drive in the upper menu bar. Follow instructions and give it a name and except the drive letter, (Z), then under Network (My Network Properties) you should find the drive/Office on the laptop.
