who is supplying my gas and electric?!

Hi we moved into our new house on Friday 13th

We have been using gas and electric but have no idea who is supplying us, we bought through the Halifax, who sold the house through an agency?!

How do I pick which company to go with as I am unsure of how much gas & elec we will use?

Hope someone can help as I don't want to get a huge bill in a few months!

Thanks x

Information on gas suppliers is held by the transporters.
If provided with a consumers address and/or meter serial number the transporter should be able to confirm the registered supplier and provide you with a contact number for the company. The meter serial number is usually located on a sticker attached to the meter.
Transporters are the only organisations that can confirm who the gas supplier is for any property you are responsible for at the time. For the vast majority of consumers, gas is transported by National Grid, Northern Gas Networks, Scotland Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks or Wales & West Utilities.
To contact any of these companies call 0870 608 1524.
If they cannot find any details it may be that the supply is via an independent gas transporter (IGT). To obtain information about independent gas transporters you need to call Envoy on 0871 225 0123.

You can find out who your electricity supplier is by calling the local distribution company.

They should confirm the registered supplier and provide you with a contact number for the company by checking your address details and meter serial number (normally located on a sticker attached to the meter) on their records. It is useful to take a note of your properties Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) for future reference.

The phone numbers for the distribution companies are below and are usually open normal 'office hours'.

Have you taken meter readings (you should have)? If so taken them again one month later and you have the first inkling of whether you are a high or low energy consumer.

You need to register with the existing suppliers first. Any application to then switch will take at least 28 days.

Easiest to get details from the Seller/EA/previous occupants of who currently supplies the property, but if that fails (e.g. because its a repo):

How to identify your gas supplier

How to identify your electricity supplier
