Soo angry!! Advice welcome...

I've just discovered this morning that one of a pair of diamond earrings that I was wearing is missing...having searched the entire house, I rang my insurance company. After a brief conversation, where I told them I didn't know where I had lost it (isn't that the definition of lost???) they told me I couldn't claim as I'd lost it outside of the house and is therefore a 'personal possession' and not a content....surely if I'd lost it in the house, it wouldn't be 'lost' merely misplaced???

I'm so cross about this...the earrings were very precious to me...I've NEVER made a claim in my insurance in 14 years...and now can't due to their legal mumbo jumbo.....can I complain/take it further....or am I on a hiding to nothing???

  • Hi there

Cover for contents can be provided including "accidental damage", but never includes "accidental loss". for "accidental loss" to be covered, regardless of whether it is in the home or not, you need "personal possessions" cover.

I'm sorry, but it's always been that way since I first started in insurance and that was a long time ago!!

why not say they went down the plug and you cant find them, i.e. damaged beyond recovery?

    Not sure about recommending fraud?!?!

As has been stated, accidental loss is not normally covered for your contents as people tend not to perminantly lose where something is within the confinds of their own property (how often can you not find where you've put your TV?) though it may take infuriating hours to remember where you put something.

PP is the mechanism for insuring against loss and covers both inside and outside of the property.

Ultimately check your policy though, there are some more full fat policies that do provide "all risks" cover but these are typically much more expensive and aimed at MNW/ HNW people.
