car insurance halp

i've been driving for three years, all the time with direct line insurance.

the first year was as a named driver and the previous two on my own insurance, so i have two years ncb.

i recently received my renewal through the post and it's up around the £780 mark (down from a shade under £1000

i've gone through various comparison sites and found that the cheapest is endsleigh at £512 tpf&t.

i am a 3rd year biology student (in uni 11 hours a week on average) and i have a part time job with a supermarket (13 hours p/w)
gocompare don't seem to have an option for student in their occupation list. given the hours i spend at each place, can i put sales as my main occupation?
what about part time? i have found biologist & i can put place of work as university. would i be able to do this?

my 2nd question is whether or not there's something afoot. the quote from endsleigh was £512 on gocompare, yet on their own website (i went there with the view of getting cashback) it's over £1700. am i typing something in wrong or is that a normal thing to happen?

thanks

it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

  • Hi there

    Here's your best bet;

    1. Note down the quotation reference for the cheapest quote.
    2. Click through to Endsleigh's website and check that all your details are correct
    3. DO NOT CLICK TO BUY THE POLICY
    4. Phone Endsleigh and go through the quote with them
    5. BE HONEST WITH THEM - They are a specialist student insurer, so will want to help.
    6. Note the name of the person you spoke to, the date and the time. Also note the number you called from (so the conversation can be traced if needed in the future).
    7. Ask them what the price would be for Third Party Only - Is your car really worth enough to worry about fire & theft insurance?

  • On your second question - I would guess you entered in slightly different details. Check it again...

You got a cheaper quote on gocompare because you lied about your job.
You're a student, with a part time job stacking shelves, not a biologist or a sales rep. Take the £780 while you still can.

    Helpful tips....

    It's spelt H-E-L-P ;)
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

I wouldnt assume that's the case. When I took my insurance out with Endsleigh, the difference between the quotes was very similar to that of the OP. My previous insurance quotes with Elephant were £700+ elsewhere and a quote of £500-600. This year I bought my insurance for around £380 with Churchill yet it was £550+ elsewhere.

Ok, you need to stipulate you're a Student in Education as apposed to Biologist @ University as this makes you appear to be an employed biologist at a university. Secondly, if you're working and you are a student you need "Class 1" use, as this allows you to drive to more than one place of "work", Social Domestic & Pleasure use won't cut it and if you crash whilst going to your part time job your insurance may become void.

Sorry to troll, help is not spelt halp, university education not cutting it these days :|

No you can't put employed as biologist, I'm certain student is on gocompare - look again. You need to put student as main 'occupation' and shop assistant or whatever you want to call it as part time occupation. No you do NOT need business class 1 use as fsrandom says, but you DO need Social domestic pleasure AND COMMUTING. That's if you're driving to work/uni, obviously.

Yes its normal for the price to shoot up when you go direct; its weird but mine did that once. If you tick the right box on gocompare endsleigh will bombard you with a sales call for every quote you put through.
Directline give NCB to named drivers don't they? So they may be able to provide you with proof of 3 years NCB, making it a bit cheaper. :D

By all means check 3rd party only, but for me it was more expensive than TPFT. Also check comprehensive, which may be only a little more/no more at all. If you do take comp, check the excesses, which are higher for young drivers. Fire and theft excesses are usually about £150 and thats it, no messing about adding compulsory, voluntary and young driver excesses together. For me (I'm 18) I was offered comp for not much extra, but with a £600 excess or something silly like that. My car isn't worth much more than that so it wasn't worth it.

The difference with regard to going direct and using price comparison websites, for me hasn't worked out as I expected. My previous insurance provider was cheaper direct than via price comparison websites. My current insurance I purchased direct, again it was cheaper. I can't remember whether I purchased my Endsleigh insurance direct or via a price comparison website though.
