Admin fee - why do we accept to pay???

Please allow me to describe a kind of charge the Institute of Education has named "admin fee" and hope that I would get as many replies from you.

I have used the Career Development Loan to pay for 80% of the fee; that cover around £1600 for this year. The course costs for this year are around £2000 thus I have to pay the remaining balance of around £400.

I went and asked the institute if I could pay in instalments. They said yes but I would have to pay £50 admin charge.

I said you are charging £1 for every £8. They said this is IoE policy and it costs us in admin work.

I said ok, well I will call my bank and set up a direct debit and your shall not have to do anything administratively speaking. To cut the long story short, I said no, I do not have £50 and I do not agree with the charge.

Before I write to their director of finance to challenge this, I was wondering whether anyone would be able to give me an opinion on this case.

I was wondering whether this could be compared with the bank charges, since it would be very difficult for them, the IoE, to prove how setting someone's payments into instalments could costs them £50.

Thank you for taking you time to read it and hopefully to reply with an opinion.

i don't know the answer, but if you can't do the course without paying, then don't make a stand and cut off your nose to spite your face.

in principle, i can understand unis asking for extra fees to cover paying in installments over paying upfront - they lose the money and can't get interest for it. using the term 'admin' fee is a different matter though. presumably, even if you set up the direct debit someone from the uni has to check that the money has come through each time?

It sounds perfectly reasonable to me; you're basically getting your course on credit and credit costs.
  • we don't charge any admin fee for students paying in instalments

We had one university send us a DSA invoice, with an admin fee in the region of £1600. That made up pretty much 50% of the total cost, and under DSA we requested a breakdown of what the admin fee was for.

Never heard back from them, and the invoice was never paid.
