The Book Depository is offering over 11,000 classic downloadable eBooks for free including works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jane Austen, Alexandre Dumas, Elizabeth Gaskell and more.
These eBooks are simply PDF files of the physical book which you can read on your PC (or even your iPhone). You'll need Adobe Reader installed to view them; if you haven't already got it you can get it free.

How to get it[/title]
Browse through the list of free eBooks on The Book Depository, pick the one you want to read and click on 'download free eBook PDF'. You don't need to enter any other details, the file should just download to your PC.
If you like these, it's also worth checking out Google Books, which offers classics to download and many more recent publications to view online.
P.S. Thanks to Arbroath Annie for the top spot.

The Book Depository UK have a promotion just now, offering 11,000 free ebooks for download. These are pdf files which you can read off your computer screen. The link is an easy one, just put in the company name on a search engine.
You may be able to put them on e readers, too, or other gadgets. If you go to the site you will find out all about it there. The books are all older ones, some classics from Jane Austen, Conan Doyle etc and lots of adventure stories. This is a reputable site, which I've used a lot over the years. The promotion will end at some time, and they will start charging for the ebooks, so take the opportunity now if interested. Hope you find something you like.0 -
Another resource is project Gutenberg which has thousands in various different formats including many in MP3I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0

With the popularity of e-books increasing, many of which are free,I tried to download an e-book before Christmas. The only place I could find it was a file sharing website that charged £1.99 to join.
The site was a scam and very rapidly they took a number of payments from my creditcard over the next twenty minutes. The software that I had to download to get my book actually contained a nasty Trojan. The site is known as marketbill.com
Do not go anywhere near it!!!0 -
I've always used www . manybooks . net for my free ebook needs. A lot come from Project Gutenburg but they convert the books into a variety of formats so you can download a version that should always work with your particular device.
Sorry for the lack of a clicky link, as apparently "as a new user you are not allowed to post with links" - presumably because I'm a dirty spammer until proven innocent. A bit rubbish if you ask me.0 -
feedbooks.com is a very good source for both out of copyright books and books licensed under a free license (like Creative Commons or Public Domain)
Books are available in pdf, and some other ebook formats0 -
Thanks for the link. Pity there's not much worth reading apart from the usual 'classics'!
Perhaps we should have a thread for ebook bargains as more and more of us are using readers.Blagged: free samples of handwash from Molton Brown; booklet of walks from Brecon Carreg;
Free Diabetes monitor, free bee-friendly seeds, a MINI coin and a splash-proof book from Radox.:T0 -
I was bought an e-reader for Christmas. I'm really pleased, but I am interested in more modern books and they all seem so expensive on all the sites I have found, some even as much as £11.99. So I haven't bought any yet, as all the books I have wanted to read have been about £3.50 in Tesco!!0
