IS this too much for gas and elecric...

Hye guys.. just wondering if this sounds about right or (as i suspect) far too much.

edf have recently setup my direct debit for my gas and electric accounts with them.

I live in a very small flat with 4 rooms (bedroom, kitchen, lounge, bathroom)

The gas heats the water, and the central heating and I have energy saving lightbulbs in all the lights. Im typically out at work 5 days a week between 7 am and 630 pm, when everything (including the heating) is switched off. The heating isnt even set to come on on a timer. I usually have it on for around an hour or two when i come home. Im also really careful about switching things off and being energy efficient.

I have friends in similar sized flats who say they ay around £40 a month total for their gas and electric combined.

However, EDF want to charge me almost £90 a month (split between gas and electric around £45 each). I tried telling the rep this sounded extremely excessive but he was convinced it sounded right.

Anyone think this sounds excessive and advice on how i can get the direct debit amount reduced?

£40 a month sounds too cheap, £90 too much. Somewhere between the 2 sounds more likely assuming good insulation and with the info given.

I think £90 sounds fine, given that the energy company will want you not to be in debt in the spring. Energy saving bulbs make little difference, it's heating and hot water that eat energy. Just read your meter after one month and ask them to reconsider if necessary.

  • Probably an obvious question but are you reading the meter?

...And I just found out that depending where you are geographical located plays a role in which comapny can offer you the best deal (it's all to do not going with who provides the infrastructure in that region.)

  • Lol yeah i am reading the meters :) actually have some guys coming out to read ithemtoday (hence i had to take a day off). Been a total mess since day 1.

Their estimates for the property say that the meter reading is around 32000 units right now..

    I checked...

    Its.. 22500....

hmm only 10000 units out...in their favour of course :rotfl:

Sounds like their 'estimates' havent been too great in the past either *sigh*.

Funny thing is when i called them about this, they said they had a meter reading done by one of their team around a month ago, already confirming the 22000 ish reading... Yet they still send me bills with 32000 units on, and now need to send some1 today, to confirm its at 22500.... even though they just told me they already know this...

Ugh why do they make it such hard work!!!

I took a meter reading on the gas and electric about 2 weeks ago myself (and told edf) but looks like its been ignored. Ill have to take some more in about 2 weeks so i know what my ACTUAL monthly usage is. (so far looks like im using around 60% of what they 'estimate').

yeah i dont mind that, i mean , i understand that anything i pay extra will take me into credit.

I just dont like paying them money i dont have to, i can afford my bills as ive been saving for a long while before i moved here. I dont see why i should pay them £90 when the current bill is say £60 and they get to hold onto £30 for next month. :S could be in my account getting interest.

totally aree about the meter thing though ill have to just make a reading and beg them to reconsider (they claim they only review once every 6 months) however, im only contracted to live here for 6 months at the moment!!! so itl be too late :(
  • I have found in the past that when we have moved in somewhere the energy company always overestimates the monthly direct debit. It appears to be standard practice, not saying I agree with it though!!!
When we first had a flat our energy company wanted £75 a month, it was a 2 bed place and brand new so had double glazing, etc. Our bills were no where near that so it was lowered. We are now in a 3 bed semi detached and our monthly bill for electric and gas is now £91 a month. Personally I think thats alot for us but we do have kids, there's always someone in the house. Definitely get the company back out to read the meter, if they have estimated it to be 10000 units more than it should be and know fine that it is well over they need to get it sorted. Usually they end up blaming the customer!! I had the problem early on when I moved to the house we are in that Scottish power never came to read my gas meter and blamed me!! The meter is outside the house so they could have had access whenever they liked, for some reason they wanted an appointment!? Eventually they came and read it and they had to give us a £200 refund as we were so much in credit. I don't mind being a wee bit in credit but that was taking the mickey.

Your energy company has standards of service to follow and you are usually entitled to compensation if they don't follow them, for example if you are in credit by a large amount and they take months to refund you. Hassle them to get your readings correct and if you want to pay a little extra just incase then thats fine, better to overpay a wee bit. Couple of extra quid a month on your direct debit once they have sorted out the right amount you should be paying. Good luck!

How much interest do you get on £30 a month nowadays?

I just couldn't be doing with any sort of stress for that sort of money.

Is the current bill £60? What period does that cover, how much heating did you use and is that based on actual readings?

It's November: few people get into credit in the winter months, quite the reverse. If EDF had set your DD at even £60 in May, you'd have cause to worry they are going to be profiting from the excess. Your alternative is to go onto a quarterly billing tariff and pay in arrears.

Well these energy companies are going to be installing digital reader that send the reading down the telephone line. I think some areas have it already.

I'm not sure if I like that idea. The companies will fly it under the 'SAVE COSTS' flag but if you weigh it up what will happen to the 100s of meter readers current reading meters around the UK. I hope Gordon has some work for them. icon5.gif

  • You need to watch EDF like a hawk. They will try to charge you too much. Ring them up and say what you think it should be.

However I used to make sure I read the meters monthly and update them with the readings by phone or on the web - that way I didn't get any nast shocks.
