Open University/Tesco Clubcard vouchers

Just a quickie, I've got £55 to pay on my next course with the OU (been funded for the rest :T).

I have £7 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers, am I right in thinking that if I use the Tesco vouchers it equates to £28 off the balance of my course?

It's not quite as simple - Tesco only give the vouchers out in £2.50 (x4=£10) amounts. As you only have £7 then you could only convert £5 into £20 to spend on the OU.
    All the details are here:

    http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/product.aspx?R=456&bci=4294966209|Learning*4294966286|The%20Open%20University

If you open the PDF, you'll see that Tesco rewards can't be used in conjunction with OU discounts, offers or promotion (not sure if you have used this) and can't be used with the OU student budget account Ltd.

It also says it's only valid for new registrations (whether this means new students or just new courses I have no idea?)

There's contact details for further clarification.

Ah I missed the £2.50 bit, thanks for pointing that out, if only I had another 50p!

I think I'll contact the OU finance lot and just double check that I can use the vouchers though I've received financial assistance, wouldn't like to waste my vouchers. The new registration bit seems likely to refer to new course registrations, but that's not really very clear either is it!

Also - you can't use clubcard vouchers if it's a post graduate course you're doing (which seems a bit unfair but no-one - tesco or the OU - can explain why!)

The reasoning is - and someone who has asked the OU has confirmed this - is that that as a postgraduate student you don't need any help in being motivated to take a higher education qualification as you know it will help you as you have to do previous undergraduate study to get to do a postgraduate degree. However undergraduate students, particularly the ones that the OU is aimed at, need help in being motivated in acquiring a degree.

Tesco is just following the OU in this instance.

In addition if you look at the price of postgraduate courses of all UK universities, not just the OU, they cost more per year of the course fees for undergraduate study for the same reason regardless of where in the world you come from.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • Sorry, bit of a late update - I've been having trouble getting logged in!

The OU confirmed that th vouchers can be used for part payment, even where financial assistance has been used, to "make up to" the balance required. The remainder is then paid by debit card as usual.

It's valid for new subject registrations, not just new student registrations. I'm now registered on my course, got confirmation through this morning! :-)
