Car Insurance and Scrappage Scheme,.. is this legal?

Hi All,
We've decided to trade in my bf's old van on the scrappage scheme, and we are also trading in my car. We're picking up the new car this weekend. The car dealer will only release the car when they are in receipt of the insurance however, and as its my bf's van being scrapped then the insurance and new car ownershio details are to be in his name initially.
However it'll work out better to have the new car in my name as I have a much longer no claims period (by a factor of £350 a year so quite substantial). So our plan was for him to transfer ownership of the new car to me on the very same day we collect it and I then transfer my current insurance policy over to it.
HOWEVER, no insurance policy will insure for just one day, and when I enquired about my plan the insurance company I spoke to said we would have to get the insurance but then cancel it immediately under the 14 day plan, and that knowing that's what we intended to do then they wouldn't offer us cover. They also said if we tried to get cover elsewhere other insurance companies would see it as deceitful.
SO is our plan (which seems to be the only way we can get insurance for the car in his name) illegal?
It's NOT illegal to transfer ownership of the new car the minute we get it as we've enquired with the garage. What's more, it doesn't even invalidate the warranty!
HELP, we need this sorted by this evening.
Thanks in advance

hmm, the car we're buying is a hyundai i20. That's the ONE car that doesn't show up on their database so the unhelpful-desk say that they don't cover it. !!!!!!??
Thanks for trying to help though, anyone else got any ideas? Is our original plan illegal?0 -
yes technically it would be fraud, try googling other 'one day cover' peopleI

PS, It was cheaper than the option of taking out a years insurance then paying a 'cancelation charge' too.... but out of interest, why would it be fraud if it was done this way?0 -
basically you are taking out a policy that you knowingly do not wish to keep,
can you let me know the 'other' company that supplied the 1day cover for my records, glad you got sorted,IMOJACAR

"For your records"? .. that sounds a bit odd, are you keeping tabs on which insurance companies people use or something?
I got the quote through day insure.
Cheers0 -
Hi no secret agenda, just so I can post the link for others should they need,
as you know my first link could not cover you,so its handy to have a back up
was it dayinsure.com ?IMOJACAR

lol, yes it was.
Aviva also quoted (exactly the same price)
... For the record, quite a few of the companies didn't quote as they didn't have the model on their books (the Hyundai i20 which was released in 2009).
Also, it was impossible to find a website that would compare temp car insurance, they all compared full 1 year policies.
Thanks again0 -
pleasure, enjoy the new carI
