Years ago when Tesco did free rail tickets with till reciepts, I went to London with my DD, we went to the Royal Mail postal Museum (sounds boring but good fun) we touched!! Freddie Mercury's stamp collection.
Then we went to the Bank of England Museum DD did a quiz and we saw lost of Gold and money.
Afterwards we had a free meal a Burger King because Kit Kat had a offer on the back of the wrapper
A great day out and all free, we still talk about it.

Have you tried googling 'free London' one good site is London for Free http://www.londonforfree.net/ with lots of ideas. Even just walking around some of the sites eg Embankment (especially at night with lights on), Houses of Parliament, Buck Palace, Downing st and the parks are brilliant. Also lots of museums are free and not at all boring - an 8yr old would enjoy the science museum but the London Museum is free and tells the story of the development of London.
Have fun and let me know how you get on:j!0 -
The vast majority of the museums are now free (Science Museum, Natural History Museum, British Museum are probably good choices in that order).
Or alternatively have a wander round Covent Garden and watch the street performers.
Lunch wise, grab a free Metro if you can - there are normally vouchers for £1.99 meal deals at McDonald's. RAF museum in Hendon. About 10 minutes walk from Colindale station on the Northern Line.

I'd second the Science Museum and Naturay History Museum. They're next to each other in South Kensington and also close to Hyde Park / Kensignton Gardens if you want a breath of (relatively) fresh air0 -
Thanks for all your ideas i'll think we'll go to the Science museum.
