International Call checker - Virgin Phone Line

Options
Hi, i currently have a BT & Virgin phone. The virgin phone is never used but is part of an inclusice TV deal £10 a month.
im thinking of cancelling my BT line and getting BB from Virgin, hence 3 packsgeas from them.
we use the international call checker site a lot to call friends and family.

With BT i know it works, dial say 0844 200xx and i get charged the stad 9p connection and say 0.5 pence per min.

now with virgin, ive just looked up on their site the call costs for 0844 200 numbers, its say 9.6p connection, plu 2.98pence per min.
so does this mean with a virgin phone calling 0844 200 (0.5ppm) will actually cost me 3.48ppm?

No, but (about) 3p per minute instead of (about) ½p per minute - Virgin have spotted a cash cow which most customers won't notice.

However, I doubt there are many MSE users who wouldn't notice a call costing 6 times more than it should!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. • Hi.
I've just checked with Virgin, who tell e that calls prefixed 0844 have a connection charge of 7p, and then 6p per minute. Confused.

To work out the cost of VM cable 0844/0871 calls you need to find the charge band
    here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/pdf/uk-nongeographic-calls.pdf

Then look at new (Oct 09) price list here: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/pdf/003342_Residential_Cable%20October%20V5.pdf

Note the new connection charge is now 9.79 p per chargeable call.

Which, surprise surprise, works out at 10p when the VAT rate reverts to 17½% (presumably on 1-1-2010).

  • It may be worth subscribing to one of Virgin Media's Talk Anywhere packages. These provide a certain number of inclusive minutes that can be used for UK geographic, non-geographic and mobile numbers. The minutes can also be used for international calls.
