Barclaycard free money!

I called barclaycard up today to cancel my accounts with them as I use my egg card all the time. They asked me a couple of questions then said that I am a good customer and for my loyalty they would credit my account with £25 if I kept the account open....tried it with mbna but only spoke to a computer.

    Congratulations

Yes, it's a good idea to phone customer services now & again to cancel an unused card. Occasionally, you're offered an incentive to stay ;)

Next time you may want to ring MBNA's loyalty department on 0800 783 1116 (during office hours) and see what they can do

  • Amex offered me a £20 credit on my account to "try it for another six months" when I called to cancel my card. I made an additional £20 puchase to clear the positive balance and the card is now sitting in a drawer waiting for the 6 months to be up then I'll call up to cancel it again.

i know this post is almost a wk old but i'm thinkin of canceling my barclaycard too. Free money sounds great! Did you use your credit card much (if you don't mind me asking)? I don't use mine much but always pay in full when i do. Will have to give this a go.
  • Been meaning to cancel my barclaycard for some time - guess might as well do it now and see if they give me free money as well! Did you use a number other than the dreaded 0844? Can't seem to find either a geographical or 0800 that actually put me through to CS grrrr...

Obviously can't speak for the OP, but if you ring Card Services during business hours on
    0800 9177 277, you'll avoid the perishing 0870/0844 numbers ;)

Thanks Moggles, on the phone to them now (well on hold while they are transferring me to the relevant team ...)

edit: they didn't offer me free money... so much for being a customer for nearly 10 years... (I was one of the "forced transfers" from Goldfish last year lol). Mind you, always pay in full at the end of the month, so I'm obviously not profitable :p

last time I used it was about 5 years ago I,ve been a customer for 10yrs...I bought a bed with it and didn't receive my nector points...and I used the 0844 number to ring them on I think. I also cancelled my one pulse card (which martin recommended, £25 free credit after first purchase offer). I can remember telling the girl I use my egg money card because of the cashback offers and she said barclay's are going to do the same, I then said that I had problems not getting nector points and she said if you stay a customer we'll credit the account for £25 as a good will gesture.

Thanks very much for the reply gtone28, it's very informative. Maybe it was just depends who you talk to then, perhaps I will give it a go, I don't use my Barclaycard often - plus just signed up to the Amazon card for the £15 offer.

try calling them on 08000 282 360. I called them last week threatening to leave they offered me 1% cashback on all purchases for last 6 months - got £40, not bad at all just for a phone call. They used to give me an extra 1% cashback but stopped doing for that so said this is the equivalent of that.
