i think they can only back bill for 12 months? i would immediately complain stating this.
im sure someone else will be able to confirm this to you too.0 -
The 12 month rule only applies if they have never billed you. If they have billed you but incorrectly then they are entitled to send you a revised corrected bill. You could argue that you can't pay it in one go and asked to spread it out over 2 years.0

Something is not quite right here. On a metric meter, each unit recorded will be converted to app. 11.2Kw to be charged for - On a cubic foot meter, each unit is converted to app. 31.5 chargeable Kw. If as you say EDF have indeed been charging you for a for units through a metric metre as though they were units on a Cubic Foot metere, then they actually owe you money0

Exactly!
I suspect the OP or EDF have got it wrong and they were billing for a Metric meter(cubic metres) when the OP has an Imperial meter(cubic feet).
This issue has come up many times and the bottom line is that they are entitled to demand the money.
In the same way, had the situation been reversed, the OP would be entitled to a refund.0 -
Thanks for the advice, we have complained and we are only paying monthly for the amount of gas we use so the extra money they are demanding is actually not getting cleared............. so it gives us time to complain, I believe the poster mentioning they owe us money is right as the meter to our home states the Imperial measurements on the meter. If it was a 'meter' charging meater then why is there no mention of this equation? we'll see.
EDF refused to send a engineer to check our meter and explain why they beleive we owe them money so we've complained about that to.
Thanks again

I have had similar happen to me.. I got behind on a direct debit and had a key meter put in to clear the debt, which was all paid up about six months ago.
I have since had a letter stating that I owe another £302 that will be collected at ten pounds a week via the meter.
I rang and ranted and the man told me that basically EDF have lost millions and are going back over the bills. I have said I want a statement of my account and a complaints form. As its there mistake I dont think its fair they tell me how much a week I should pay without first checking my circumstances, I have no idea how the mistake arose, or even if it really did.....It seems to me, they could do this to me over and over and there is nothing much I can do to stop them!0 -

I think you have misunderstood.
If your meter has Imperial measurements(cubic feet) each gas unit is approx 31kWh.
It would appear that EDF have been charging you for a Metric meter(cubic metres). Each gas unit on this meter is approx 11.2kWh.
So, as an example only, if since 2007 you had used 1000 gas units on your Imperial meter you should have been charged for 31,000kWh.
Instead if EDF have been calculating consumption assuming you had a metric meter, they would have only charged you for 11,200kWh.
So they would now be billing you for the additional 19,800kWh.0 -
shame you didnt transfer while they didnt realise0
