    I will try that
  • I'm told that if you spray the prepared soil with oil before planting your tatties, they come up ready roasted by christmas :-)

i think it may depend on where in the country you are. Winter salads do well - if you can provide some see through cover, a lot of lettuces will do fine. some onions sets are planted in the autumn, some broad bean seeds and garlic cloves can go in later. bbc gardening website have a variety of veg plot pages for advice - especially if you're starting out. if you google what can i plant now you should find lots of sites that will help.

Onions, chard, winter salads (mainly oriental). I plant potatoes in buckets which stay out until it gets frosty, then come into the (unheated but frost-free) conservatory. Broad beans should apparently be planted on Bonfire Night and they will spring up on New Year's Day. I can testify to this - bunged 'em all in the ground and thought they'd died, New Year's Day there were loads of little green shoots. You can also plant spring cabbages now - mine are waving sadly at me from little pots in my greenhouse.

The main thing stopping things from growing is not the temperature but the light - or lack of. If you can start things off in a greenhouse or conservatory, then you might be in time to grow a number of things.
