Hey guys,
Hope your all keeping well.
I am having a little bit of trouble at the moment with my bank. I'm only 18 and still a student so this is all new to me and a bit of kick in the nads.
Right, I am currently with Natwest, i have been for a number of years now having previously an account for 11-17 year olds before i turned 18. Anyways at the turning of 18 the bank after a few months contacted me saying that they were updating me to an over 18 current account, after reading some of the leaflets they sent I decided that this account was pretty poor and started looking for another bank to join, I decided to join The Cumberland (a building society) and switched my wages over to be payed into that account, also emptying the money out of my Natwest account ready for closing.
This is where things start getting bad, the Gym i was at, The Sands (Carlisle) My years membership with them had ran out, i got no notification from them at the end of this period and was under the impression that, now my card had expired the direct debit to my account (set up when i was 17) had stopped also. To my suprise, when checking my account recently after being payed and making sure my money was definitly being paid inot my new bank, I found that i was overdrawn £13, which was taken out by the Direct Debit I had with The Sands, in other words they were still charging me for my gym membership even though my card had expired. So i went in and queried this and they told me that it was written in the terms and conditions that I had to formally write to them to cancel my membership. Great
. Anyways, this payment was taken out on 31/08/09 or 01/09/09, and due to the fact i had no money in my account, its now made me overdrawn. Anyways i went to the bank today to pay in the £13 and cancel the account and i was told that to close my account i would have to also, pay the charges for being overdrawn. This is where i found out that i was being charged for 2 charges. £28 for being overdrawn between (unknown date) and the 02/09/09 and another £28 for being overdrawn between the 02/09/09 and 23/09/09. That means for this direct debit that has been taken out without me realising, i am going to have to pay £56 worth or charges plus the £13 that im overdrawn. I mean i'm a student and have bills to pay, how the hell am i supposed to do that on a 16hr a week part time job
.
I'd really appreciate some advice on what to do because to the frank, i'm pretty screwed.
Thanks in advance
Chris

Cards and Direct Debits have no correlation.
Direct Debits use your bank account information, not your card information.
When cancelling DDs you must cancel with the company the DD goes to, not the bank.0 -
As the Direct Debit was only taken on the 1st Sept ask the bank if you can claim it back under the direct debit scheme and advise them that the payment was taken in error.
Otherwise you would need to dispute it with the orginator. However I would now make sure that the DD is now cancelled with Natwest and the originator.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -

Yes very true you can cancel it at the bank but you also need to cancel it with the orginator. As theres nothing stopping them from setting the DD up again seeing as you have not notified them of the cancellation.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
I cancelled the DD today when i was in and i'm in the process of writing to The Sands asking them to stop the DD and not charge me any futher. I'm going to send it off tomorrow.0

Wouldn't that be a blatant lie based on the post I've copied below? The direct debit hadn't been cancelled. The agreement signed with the gym allowed them to collect it.As the Direct Debit was only taken on the 1st Sept ask the bank if you can claim it back under the direct debit scheme and advise them that the payment was taken in error.
General Gab, go back to Nat West and plead with them to be nice.General_Gab wrote: ». So i went in and queried this and they told me that it was written in the terms and conditions that I had to formally write to them to cancel my membership.
If not, contact their complaints department clearly stating that this is the first time you've been charged and ask politely for them to reimburse the fees.
If that fails, go to the charge reclaiming section of this site.0 -
Only spoke to them today, like i said i was totally shocked to find out that i was even OD, i mean i thort the DD with the sands had finished, so when they told me they were going to charge me £56 for being £13 OD i was like errr errrrrr help get me out of here and just left saying id be back in touch0

Yeah i know i hear the same story aleast 20 times a day.
People always claim to have cancelled DDs when they really havent then they start getting all defensive and start blaming the bank when they get charged.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
With the gym, have you checked with them how many months' notice you have to give? At the gym I'm at it is 3 months!0

To make it cheaper, my gym allows 'suspension' of the account at a cost of £5 per month for a max of 6 months. So, if you can, suspend the account and after 1 month, give 3 months' notice and it will only cost £20 instead of 3 months at full fee.0
