I have been complacent and not checked the number and I am now paying £48 for 3 phone calls to australia. This is since I am with talk/talk.However I didn't used this number ever before. I used it on 1st april. At the end of the day you can't put a price on being able to talk to your relatives.I believe there is nothing I can do about it.Cautionary tale.

Yes I'm afraid this is the reality and I'm sorry to see that Martin has apparently blindly endorsed the "Free Broadband" offer without investigating the inflated charges for using alternative providers. Not to mention that TalkTalk don't allow other providers through prefix codes :rolleyes:chun wrote:I have been complacent and not checked the number and I am now paying £48 for 3 phone calls to australia. This is since I am with talk/talk.However I didn't used this number ever before. Unfortunately, this appears to be yet another instance of telco personnel incorrectly programming their accounts system and, initially at least, the telco in question refusing to acknowledge or correct the error.
In brief, the 0.425p/minute excl. VAT (0.5p/minute incl. VAT) which should have been input has been input as £0.425/minute excl. VAT (£0.50/minute incl. VAT). That means they are overcharging users by a factor of 100 (a £5 charge is applied for a 10 minute call - which should have cost 5p).
The problem (as has previously been detailed HERE, HERE and HERE) is convincing the telco of their error.
The Small Claims Court may end up the only way to recover the overcharge. However, if your line rental is still with BT (i.e. you're only on CPS), using the 1280 prefix to route such calls via BT will ensure you're not overcharged again.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
This is a billing system error.Where TT ,Onetel, and Telewest are incorrectly charging 50p a minute for a half a pence a minute number.
Telewest have now corrected the matter i read.
If you go to this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=188828 (Post No 12) Their is an e-mail sent to Onetel you could copy, and send to TT.0 -

I'm glad you used the word "apparently" as it seems you haven't read the articles regarding the TalkTalk offer.

but notice that TalkTalk have said that they will keep prices in line with BT but what is going to stop them going back on that? Did they give Martin a special assurance that they categorically wouldn't increase prices for the override numbers for 18 months at least (the 18 months being the minimum contract time)??
I've had bad experiences with TalkTalk and I dont' feel I can trust the demented parrots that work there to keep anything to their word - I had to submit a Data Protection Act enquiry from them to obtain my account notes to prove that they had in fact accepted my cancellation of CPS service, even though they continued to charge me and denied ever receiving a call from me letting them know.
There are many on here and on the SAYNOTO0870.COM forum that know TalkTalk for the charlatans that they are. The ASA is currently investigating their "Free Broadband" commercials - make up your own mind about them.
Btw I'm sorry if it looked like I was dissing Martin - I really didn't mean to but I was annoyed by the torrent of people who thought "TalkTalk are so kind to give everyone free broadband"... remember, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch
Moneysavers should already know that
