O2 Money Card - is authorised like visa debit or electron?

Hi, I have the new O2 money card, and since this is my first ever try at a prepaid card (due to the fact that all the other prepaid cards rip you off), is this card treated as a Visa Debit or a Visa Electron card. I know that the Electron card cannot be used at train stations, but can this card be used online, as i have always had switch/maestro? Also are there any more limitations to the o2 card that a normal visa debit card can do.
thanks
thanks

Hi Sweetstudent
The way I read it - The O2 Money Card is used where ever Visa is accepted, in shops and online. If it were an Electron card it would be written on it already. It is to be treated like a credit card, with the debit card limits on it (eg: you can't spend money which is not already on the card)
I only discovered this card online last night when checking my O2 bill. So I have applied for one as I only have a basic bank account with Electron card due to debt. At least now I will not have to ask to borrow a credit card for online shopping when the online store does not accept my Electron card
I hope this helps answer your question

Hi
I think you should bear in mind this card will not be treated like a credit card. It is, if you like, a slightly better variation of Electron and as such must be authorised at each transaction or will be declined - similar to electron.
The name of the card is an All Authorisation Card whereas the ones you get with banks, and a cheque guarantee limit is a Full Card. What this means to you is that the card 'may' be declined on trains and at Tesco petrol forecourts because these are offline terminals and as they cannot ring the bank for authorisation, the transaction is declined. Only full cards will go through because they do not have to be authorised at POS.2010 - year of the troll

Things is people have reported trying this card over on the bankruptcy board in pay @ pump machines, tescos on-line etc. all the places you would expect electron to be declined and it worked.
The Paypal prepaid card says debit on it, but in the BIN list it is an electron card.
The o2 card just says Visa on it, and is in neither the electron nor debit BIN list, just the usual Visa one, the same as a credit card.
I know it is all programmed in to the Chip anyway and it should make no difference, but people who have used it have reported this card works in places that the Paypal one just comes up as electron and wont work.
So it would seem there is something different with it, which is odd to me given the PayPal card is issued by RBS. I know the o2 one is NatWest but I am sure their prepaid division is all in the same office.0 -

Hi Matey - cheers, that kinda answers it then (only half though). If its using a Visa BIN then evidently it 'should' proceed as a Credit Card payment which if so, then this is brilliant but one would assume that Natwest will be prepared for the abuse.....
Fos instance, we all know Tesco P@P only authorise £1 so lets say I get an o2 card and top up with a tenner, it 'should' in theory allow me to fill up to the standard £59 floor limit...... you guys following me yet?
Electron and Solo both block this by insisting upon authorisation - now the latest Visa debits (for basic accounts) follow suit so even though their BINis that of Visa Debit, it still blocks Tesco P@P and the like.... Why doesn't the o2 card then?
Bottom line is if it shares a Visa BIN then it can allow over limits which defeats the purpose of pre-paid cards so something somewhere doesn't quite add up.....2010 - year of the troll

I got a card a few weeks ago that seems like the O2 card its provided by yes money and affilated to my football team.
I got this to help as i now use a basic account for my main account.
Now this card looks like the O2 card it has the visa logo on the bottom of it seems like a electron card as it has for electronic use only on the back of it for some reason has a six digit pin code.
the first time i used it was to book a hotel yesterday and was confused what to click debit etc.
So i choose electron and it went through ok so hopefully it works for ryanair:money:Lbm Spoke to Payplan August 2009 £29000.00
current balance £0.00

On the frequently asked questions page for 02 money the following question is asked and answered:
▼ When I'm shopping online and I'm asked what sort of Visa card I hold, which do I enter?
Visa debit.0 -
Strange indeed, it would be open to abuse and being it is electronic use only you would imagine it should be authorising every transaction in real time.
I know when I managed to overdraw my old Cashplus card on a train by £64 (I had nothing on it and handed over the wrong card, honest) they came after me and threatened to report me to the Police for theft if I did not pay up quick smart which I did.
As M Thomson has pointed out you are supposed to selected Visa Debit as the card type but it is definitely not on that BIN list, yet.
At the bottom of Barclays Merchant Services latest list, it states something like:
Amendment:
Visa have asked us to move number 4xxxxx Visa Credit to 4xxxxx Visa Debit.
So it seems things dont remain static and hopefully this is what will happen with the Co-op Cashminder Visa Debit Card, another amendement from Visa themselves will come through to align the card with what is printed on it.
Edit: It will be interesting to see where it can and cannot be used, I know the T&C put restrictions on things I think buying insurance is one of them, but they will indeed have a problem if they continue to allow it to work off-line and people become aware of this.0 -
Its effectivly a visa electron same as the paypal one. no raised numbers and it says on the back electronic use only.
Some sites accept it as visa electron, except ryanair they put it though as Visa debit and get a £10 commission.
It doesn't work at tesco's online or pay at pump. the only advantage of this one of the paypal one is that cash withdrawls are free.
Its quite a silly card, you have to top it up by debit card, why not just use the debit card in the first place. The one that you can top up and Paypoint has a really low limit suitable for kids.0 -
oh well, I suppose it was inevitable. Just that people over on the bankruptcy board seemed to be getting on with it much better.0
