Bt free weekend calls / caller display / primus

Options
Hope someone can clarify as I'm going around in circles on this one. I have BT line rental (free weekend calls option) and CPS with Primus for the free evening and weekend calls of up to 90 mins. I use 18185 for daytime calls. I signed up for BTs free caller display under the BT privacy thing, then got an e-mail saying I needed to make 6 chargeable or inclusive calls per quarter or I would be charged £5.13 / quarter.

I've not been using BT for weekend calls, just my CPS (Primus). Reading up on the BT Free Weekend calls, it says I must make 1 call to qualify for the free calls - does this mean I need to make
1) a (BT paid for) weekday call to qualify for the free calls, or
2) a weekend call (that I pay BT for), and then all weekend calls are free, or
3) a weekend call (through BT but not charged), and all other weekend calls are free?
(Calling through BT by prefixing with 1280)
Hope someone can help

    I would think it's number 3.
  • Just got a call back from BT (I e-mailed them last week) and its no.1 - I have to make a chargeable call during the week (i.e.one per month) to get the free weekend calls. I asked what happened if I only made calls at the weekend, and aparently I will be charged the normal price, and not have any free calls at the weekend.

Yes, it's one CHARGEABLE (at any time) call per month to 'qualify' for the inclusive weekend 01/02/03/0845/0870 calls (of up to 60 minutes each) which are allowed under the Unlimited Weekend Plan and 2 chargeable OR inclusive calls per month to 'qualify' for 'free' Caller Display and/or basic 1571 (but please don't use that).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks Heinz - any views on transfering the line rental to Primus instead of BT? I know in the past they had poor customer service / billing problems, but with line rental now down to £9.49 plus 56p for caller display, this is looking more competitive than £11.25 plus chargeable calls for extras?

Personally, I stick with the "better the devil you know" philosophy - but I take you point about the £1.20 or so extra per month.

BTW, it's only one chargeable call per month. I now have one of my calls (the one with the 1280 prefix) to the local Indian takeway down to a fine art - less than a minute to finish the niceties and place the order!

  • Mmmm. I think I'll be sticking with (the devillish) BT for the moment, and awaiting comments from those who have transfered to Primus (following Martin's e-mail last week) and any billing problems over the next few months.

Your takeaway order - I take it this is a weekday evening. I'm just trying to decide if it is worth the bother for the caller display (although it is an excuse for a curry)...

I wonder what is meant by 'normal price'? Try asking. The response would be very interesting. And while you are at it you could point out you would now have made a chargeable call so would again be eligible for free calls at the weekend. Or, would you be deprived of that service for ever and ever?

My experience: five month at a time with zero call charges and without any consequences.

Two calls per month at weekends covers the conditions for free caller display.
  • Do you mean that you are using BT only at weekends, and making BT calls, but not being charged for any? Still confusing (and speaking to them wasn't much clearer).

It's exactly what I mean. Try asking what Plan you would be on on your return to the UK after a 6 month round the world holiday and the phone not being used during that time.
