I had a salesman at my door wanting me to sign up to Southern Electric, and one pitch he used is that he said the government were offering a 17% (or so) tax discount to Southern Electric as it is a UK based and owned company unlike many other providers. He said the government wanted to do this to encourage customers to stimulate the UK economy. He said SE would pass this on to customers.
Does anyone know if there is any truth in this claim or is just embellishing?

yes southern are british (so are bgas), they may be able to offer a 17% discount but it would depend on who you are with and how you may pay (eg still with original supplier and paying by paygo moving to them on dd), but the whole govt thing is a load of !!!!.
i've always found sse to be a good company from my perspective and never had a problem with their cst service but some of their sales staff just seem to be out to conn people! do these numpties not know they will get caught out??0 -
no he gave me some kilowatt hour prices to look at and compare with what I pay now, so will still mull it over.0

don't talk to sales men use this site and its recommended comparison sites instead0 -
I had the same last year from BG when I had them for electric selling gas on the phone. They slagged off my current supplier for not being British even though Centrica is probably owned by a firemen pensioners in Wyoming's or a mutual insurance company in Dallas.
The energy companies obviously use the same training companies or consultants.
