Is WTC entitlement affected by partner's income?

Options
My partner is shortly to become self-employed and is wondering if it would be worth his while to apply for WTC. We have no children, are not married and I receive an incapacity pension. Does any income I receive have to be declared and is it likely to affect whether or not he is entitled to WTC?

Any help appreciated.

In short, yes your income will be counted - tax credits are based on household income.

So it really depends how much income you have and how much your partner expects to earn from his new business. Also, remember that anything your partner has earned since April will also be counted in this years award (awards run from April to April).

Childless couple can currently get WTC up to an income of just over £15K. This will go up a bit in April.

You say you get an incapacity pension - are you aware that there are some "disability" elements in WTC? Even if you don't work, your partner may be able to claim an element if your incapacity is severe enough. This would mean you are entitled up to a higher income level.

Thanks for the interesting info. We are at the moment totally ignorant about WTC and are just gathering any info. we can before my partner starts up his business. It will just be a very small business but, as I do not work, we're obviously anxious to claim everything we can, so I'll look into the "disability" elements.

    Thanks again.
