SoundProofing Walls

Our living room is due to be redecorated shortly and I am going to have the the walls skimmed. However I want to take the opportunity to try and cut down on the noise that transmits to and from next door in our 1970's semi. I am not a DIY expert but I have seen in a DIY book that is possible to build a 'stud wall' filled with mineral wool which will help to cut down the noise. Has anyone had something similar done or got an idea on costs? We have a builder coming round in a couple of days and I am not quite sure how to specify what I want (other than repeating the above) - is this called dry lining? As it is a big enough room I am OK with losing a bit of space to accomodate this. I have found some web sites with specialist companies selling expensive acoustic boards which you simply glue to the wall, however this seems a very expensive option to me and don't really want to go down that route if I can avoid it. Also we have a few sockets on the wall in question which might prove troublesome?
If anyone can give me any advice or share their experiences on this it would be greatly appreciated.

HI..yes, we had this done along a party wall in one of our bedrooms. The builders made up a wooden framework and filled this with special sound-proofing wadge ( not sure what it's called tho, but the builders should know). This was then covered in ordinary plasterboard. YOu can also get plasterboard that is, in itself sound proofing, but we didn't.
There were no probs in bringing the sockets forward either...they just make holes in the new plasterboard and bring the sockets forwards. This was all then skimmed over and looks like the originial wall, once the skirting is all back in place and lined up.
The results are good..far less noise coming thro from next door, although it isn't eliminated completely, as sound also travels along the ceiling gaps, between the joists. YOu could consider getting this done too, if the noise is excessive.
Good luck0
