Not been given any details about where my deposit went..

.. is this a broken rule?

I paid my deposit last month and I paid a months rent in advance. Should I have received some kind of paperwork?

Yes, you should have been notified within 14 days.

Ask your agent or landlord what has happened to your deposit and where your notification is.

You've moved into a turkey of a property haven't you?! Safety issues AND deposit issues - sounds like you are going to have to be on your toes with this landlord. I'd be extra cautious to keep documentary evidence of EVERYTHING, take photos of the place now and after you have cleaned it, check and double check the inventory, send all communication recorded delivery, get receipts for any money paid out.
