John Lewis: good service

I have twice used John Lewis in the past few days:
1) Planning to go TV digital I looked at the options in this area. My research on the web was ambiguous: The Freeview website indicated that the service is not available for my postcode. The MSE comparison site http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1132313772,58146,#comparison suggested otherwise by listing Freview as an option along with Sky and NTL.

I went to JL for advice. They consulted Freeview on the internet and got the same result that I had. They added that people have bought Freeview in my area but the reception is patchy and unreliable. There was no attempt to sell me a set-top box nor the ubiquitous warrantly extension that I would have been offered elsewhere.
2) We needed a replacement Fridge-freezer. JL had a Bosch which had been returned by a customer who decided they didn't like it when it was delivered. They knocked £50 off the already " never knowingly undersold" price which I had previously checked out on the web.
They offered a p.m. window for delivery (not the usual day). We phoned during the a.m. and were told it would be here around 2 p.m.. It duly arrived at 2.10 p.m.
They further took the old FF away for £15 on delivering the replacement; my local authority charge double this and you have to arrange and wait for them to arrive to pick up.

I emerge a satisfied JL customer. Its a shame I can't buy shares in the company!

Similare good experience with them - no hard sell, good product knowledge and good prices. They are always a good bet for white goods - my last fridge freezer was £75 more in JL than comet, but they agreed to price match, then delivered for free (comet wanted about £15) and gave an additional 1 year warranty for free

Friend at work bought a tv from JL they did a price match with another shop and the service was first class
  • The best bit is buying something and NOT being offered an extended warranty - bliss.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%

The few times I have used John Lewis (Sheffield) the service has been appalling! Once was for our wedding list when they were too busy and could never answer the phone, then said they would call back and didn't. We tried to arrange the delivery of our goods for 2 1/2 weeks before we managed to speak to anyone who could arrange it (everyone else said they would ring back and didn't), when we finally arrnaged it, it took a further 3 weeks for them to have an available slot to deliver in. Next they didn't turn up on the agreed day of the delivery and we were told it had been overlooked. Then they sent out some warehouse workers with the delivery who did not collect half of the stuff that had been paid for. When they realised their mistake some of the items were out of stock and we had to wait weeks for them to be sent from different areas of the country. We did eventually receive it all and were given compensation in the form of John Lewis vouchers. We used these to put towards a computer desk and were told it would be delivered in a weeks time as it was in stock and had been reserved for us. When it didn't arrive on the day we were told it would we rang to find out why and were told it had since gone out of stock and we would have to wait for 4 weeks (even though we had already paid for the item and been told it had been reserved for us). We did eventually receive it but needless to say we have not been back again since.

with their tvs their is no need for anyone to offer an extended warranty as they give 5 years for free - this is even transferrable to other people if you sell the tv. it is totally fantastic, and the only place i would ever consider buying a tv, as this is worth more than the tv usually. they replaced my 4 1/2 year old tv, after being broken by my son, for a brand new one, and even gave me another 5 year warranty.

Ten years ago we had the upstairs of our new house fully carpeted by JL, one room was 8 inches wider than the carpet roll so a strip had to be inserted, the carpet was plain dark red in a childs bedroom. The fitter told me it didnt match propoerly so what would I like to do, i phoned JL who offered me £500 or a replacement for all the upstairs carpets. i took the £500 and covered up the mismatch with toys.

Since then i have bourght TV's,fridges, beds, pillows etc etc.Not so sure about clothes as not realy my style but for all other things they are the best.

Dont even get me started on their even more impressive food shops and the internet delivery service.

I don't work for them or have any links except my ex next door neighbours sister works for Waitrose.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Hear, hear for JL - we buy most white goods etc from them.

Also, we recently rang to see if they had some particular material in stock, simply to save ourselves a trip if they hadn't. They did and immediately offered to deliver free of charge. Item arrived within 2 hours so they must have been coming our way anyway!

In some cases yes but you will have to wait for a decision, they would not price match the lcd tv I just bought, but it was £380 cheaper than their price despite saying they would match the price but when I tried to order they had reconsidered their position.

John Lewis are good for tv's but they are not the cheapest, and you can buy a warranty online (with accidental damage cover) and still save a few quid.
