Very slow computer -help please

I have an oldish computer but it is (usually ) fine for what we want, but since wednesday it is painfully slow to boot up and then very slow also to load any page. I have done a full malaware scan and antivir, which bought up 1 trojan which was removed. Still have the problem so tried to do a system restore and it will not let me do it, i have tried 4 dates in the last month and will not let me restore to any of them. Can anyone helpbefore the computer goes out of the window. Thanks

What are you using to do a malware scan? What AV program are you using?
    Which OS-XP?

    7. Check the VRAM settings i.e.:

    - Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
    - Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Performance, click Settings.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Virtual memory, click Change.
    - Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
    - Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
    - Click OK three times and restart your computer.

Was very interested in this one - as my pc runs really slowly, however, I am really worried about running 'clean up' programmes as my IT knowledge would fit in an ant's brain! I have Kaspersky on pc at the moment, is this enough to find out if there's anything on my pc that shouldn't be? and if not if I get anythig else will this disappear as this was paid for? I have read the replies from macman and david83mt but is all 'techie' stuff that I don't get! Am on windowsxp is about as techie as I get! So one syllable words of help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry a bit a long one!
