Are house prices now affordable

Simple answer, yes or no. Theres no set of rules on who should be buying and what they should be able to buy for this thread, so theres no need for the pedantic out there to be stating clauses. In general are house prices now affordable?
Yes / No.
There seems to be a push to get the point across that house prices are now affordable, and are less than 5x the average wage now.
I just want to get a snapshot of who believes this is the case, and who doesnt, as I can't believe most of us think house prices are now affordable.....without having to go through all the routes of who should be able to buy what.

it depends if you buy or you've bought at an affordable price, have a good mortgage rate that makes repayments affordable and you can service that debt amongst other house costs.
if you can't it's not affordable - that doesn't mean that property is not affordable.0 -

If you can afford it, it's affordable, yes. That goes without saying.
But I said in general

But I said in general
More affordable than they were in 07? Yes.
Can everyone now afford one? No.
Can more people afford one than in 07? Yes.
Can more people get the mortgage they want than in 07? No.
Can a simple yes or no cover the whole population and all it's variables? No.
A completely meaningless question. IMO.0 -

Fair enough, and I'd guess for some conditions have to be attached. All I want is a snapshot poll of what people believe. It's the simplicity that I am looking for. Yougov polls etc are extremely simple, but give conecrete answers to peoples beliefs.
That's what this is about

Well they are ware I live but they were fairly affordable in the boom.
Are Porsche's affordable. Yes but it does not mean I could afford to run one!
I can't really answer as i don't know the rest of the UK personally but I would say that they will remain unaffordable for a lot of the population.
You will always have people on higher and lower wages.0 -

Well going on that I have to say YES as my house is 9X more afforable than last year.
but that does not mean houses are affordable.
It is a nothing poll graham and one to suport your agenda of making people bulls or bears by having a public poll:p
You should have a don't know if it was a snap poll0 -
YesPeople can afford what they can afford.
It is a stupid thing to say, but then it's really the answer to the question.
If house prices dropped to 50k, there would still be some people that couldn't afford them. If the question is "can mr average afford the average house", that's quite an easy one to work out, but not of too much value either.
As it stands, I think we're getting to a state where most middle class people can afford to buy, but probably not many working class folks - but the house prices are going to have to tumble for a couple of people earning, say, 20k between them can afford a decent place to live - and I think that would have some pretty harmful implications in itself...So, out of 10 of affordability, I'd say we're around a 7 or 8 now. Could be a little better, but I think it's closer to "affordable" than "not", realistically.0 -

Then you can answer. You believe yes.
There is no such thing as "don't know" when your asking for no conditions attached, as that automatically means you are attaching conditions.
When Yougov send out a poll, they ask you "do you think David Cameron is doing a good job". Next Question is "do you think Gordon Brown is doing a good job".
It does not apply conditions to try and condition your answer. It also does not have a bias, it is JUST asking your opinion. So this is nothing to do with Bears and Bulls.
I just cannot believe what I am seeing all over, not only this forum, but in the media etc about house prices now having reached affordability, so I wanted to gauge others opinions.
Simple poll, for a simple result. Think "sentiment" and you will be along the right lines of where I am coming from.
I won't clarify the poll anymore from here on in as it will just be a thread of me clarifying the most simple of questions every 2 posts!
