Internet Sharing Blueyonder

I've bought linksys wireless router and access point but can't share the internet connection.
My broadband comes in through a Webstar PX100 and is attached via usb to my main computer. I would imagine I have to get the main computer to receive the internet through the ethernet point but this doe not appear to work. Should I start from scratch and try to set up my Blueyonder through the ethernet or is there some way I can check the ethernet ports on the webstar and my computer are indeed working.

Are you using the right ethernet cable?
When we joined our computers together initially we used crossover cable but when we decided to join more on we bought a router and had to change to a straight through cable as the router does the crossing over itself.
We have our broadband coming in via braodband modem aswell and have used both the USB connection and the ethernet connection without trouble.
  • What OS are you using?

What's the model number of the Linksys WAP?

Does your ADSL modem have an Ethernet port as well as USB?

How many computers are you trying to network?

Which of these do you want to connect wirelessly and which via ethernet cable?

Sorry I need to connect two pcs.
I thought the main pc should be connected via the ethernet cable but need help.
  • Start off with the following set-up:

Phone-line -> modem -> patch cable to router -> router patch cable -> main pc.

Run network/internet connection wizards from main pc.

not sure why you felt the need to buy a wireless AP and a wireless router. ??? Normal architecture for one PC wired and one wireless to internet, is to have a PCI wireless card in the PC and a combined wireless modem/router/access point in one box that the other PC connects to with a patch cable.

Can you explain how the network is configured clearly?

if the cable modem is connected to the PC via USB then it is pointless to try and connect via ethernet.

The router might need to be told that the cable modem is the gateway (you might need to set your computer as the gateway if the cable modem is using a virtual ethernet USB connection).

Blueyonder use MAC addresses as part of the authenication. I've supported somewhere which had a blueyonder connection with a cable modem with a ethernet connection to the computer. When I needed to replace a faulty network card I had to go onto the blueyonder site and register the MAC address of the new network card in the account details.

    If you are connecting

How I think it should work!!!!

Cable comes into Webstar desktop modem.
Connect ethernet from modem to internet slot on router.
Connect main pc via ethernet into 1 of four slots on router.
My main problem seems to be getting my head round the fact that I cannot access the internet on the main pc if I simply connect to the modem with an ethernet cable instead of the usb. This being the case I can't expect the main pc to access when it is going through the router. It's more than likely a configuration problem on my behalf, as you can gather I know nowt about networking.

What I would suggest is connect your main PC to the internet using your modem on a USB connection. Get this all up and running first before you go any further.

If you don't mind running wires between the two PCs, all you need is a crossover ethernet cable from one PCs ethernet card, to the second PCs ethernet card. To get your network up and running from here you can use ICS (internet connection sharing) or a proxy. You would set the main PC as your gateway for both machines.

Here is a site that may help you out. http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

If ICS is giving you too much trouble. You can use a proxy.
You can find a cracking little free proxy here http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htm
I've been using this for quite a while at home and think it is an excellent freebie. It's very easy to set up (easier than ICS) it took me less than 5 mins to download and get everything up and running with this.

  • imho can't see the point of using ICS or proxy if you've got a NAT router.

Suggest you try to set up a wired LAN between your PC and your router. I would guess your router is DHCP server by default. Once you have the subnet running add the modem to the network using an ethernet patch cable from the router. Then see if you can see the modem on your LAN. If that's OK then connect up the cable coax to the modem and try to configure from there manually.

also with BY you used to have to "spoof" the mac address of the router to that of the original PC network card. Or register the MAC address of the router
