glass hobs & hoods - opinions

looking at getting a new gas hob and was wondering which was better - black glass or stainless steel? The hob must be gas and we were initially going for stainless steel, but then saw there were quite a few of the black glass kind too. Are the glass easier to clean? less prone to staining, more durable, or is it purely down to looks?
Also, having looked at the variety of chimney hoods on the market, I see there are the same choices for canopies - glass or stainless steel. Again, I would imagine glass would be easier to keep clean, but possibly needs cleaning more often.
Any opinions on hobs/hoods would be greatly appreciated, and as with all kitchen related threads on this forum, I'm sure there will be many views.
thanks.

not seen a white glass hob - must look out for one the next time we're at the appliance store. I imagine it would be harder to see smears on it than black glass, depending on how the light catches it. Useful comment about the dirt trap around the edges.0

I have this gas on glass hob and this glass hood.
The hob is black glass and clean it as Andy says, it does need drying off with a microfibre cloth to keep it smear free.
The glass extractor hood shows the dust but is easy to clean, again microfibre cloth but I also yesterday tried one of those anti-static sprays you use for TV and computer screens.
Not sure if a s/steel hob would be easier to clean as I've never had one. After experimenting with the chimney part of my cooker hood, forget all the fancy s/steel cleaners or baby oil etc. A wet microfibre cloth, a bit of elbow grease then dry off with a microfibre cloth was all that was needed to get rid of the builders' fingerprints they left all over it!
ETA: The glass extractor hood - I'm talking about dust settling on the top bit and cleaning with a microfibre cloth. The underneath bit which could catch splashes from cooking (as nearlyrich mentions below) I haven't had as I use a splatterguard if I do any frying, but hot soapy water and a microfibre cloth should shift it.0 -
Hi, To be honest I don't think there is anything to choose between glass or stainless steel for the gas hob in terms of cleaning, but what I would say is worth considering is the quality and stability of the pan stands. Generally on a glass hob the pan support only supports the pan directly over it where as normally a stainless steel hob would have a much greater coverage of the support area so therefor you can move the pan all over the cooking area and it would stay stable.0

We have a glass and steel chimney extractor, it does need a wipe over regularly especially if my son has a fry up. I stick the filter cover in the dishwasher every week or so. Looks good if you keep it looking clean.0
