"misty" water

Hello
The water that comes out of the cold water tap in the kitchen is very misty (it has lots of small air bubbles in it) unless I run it for a few seconds.
What causes this and is there a way to have clear water straight away, without having to run/waste water first?

Hello
!
I remember a couple of years ago after our water had been turned off, the water was coming out "cloudy". When I rang the water board they said it was perfectly safe but was something to do with the pressure. Might be worth ringing your local board to ask.0 -
Is it also warm? We have this & I've put it down to the hot & cold pipes being close, & the hot not lagged so when it's very hot it transfers to the cold - must get that insulation on!0

The best way to get clear water without waste would be to get some form of water filter. Cheapest type is the jug version you can keep in the door of the fridge.0

If the mistiness is air bubbles than a filter would be pointless. The air bubbles don't impact on the quality of the water and will settle out if you leave the water to stand for a few seconds.0

It's just air and it disappears after a few seconds. Why would you worry about it?
I've got permanently white water coming out of my hot tap (unvented non-combi boiler system) it has so much air and it turns clear very quickly once its out the tap.
I've had this before on other high pressure hot water systems.

A few years back I worked for a water company - and it does sound like air in the water.
It won't do any harm - if you prefer not to drink it like that, run some into a jug and leave to stand in the fridge and the air will evaporate, leaving the water clear again.
Running the water will not make any difference, it could be that there are works in the area and it may resolve itself once that has been completed.0 -
Yes the water is warm as well.
Personally the mistiness in the water does not bother me, but the OH wastes a lot of water waiting for it to run clear which is maddening when I have a water butt in the garden collecting rainwater
Thanks for the water jug suggestion as well.0 -
Milky water is caused by super-saturaion of air in water.
Cold water can hold more air than hot so when the water is heated air is forced out (boiling water anyone?). When the water is in a pressurised container like the pipe to your tap and is heated either because its a hot water pipe or like your cold tap runs next to a hot pipe and is affected by it then it has nowhere to go. It is kept in solution by the pressure.
You open the tap and release the pressure and the air can get out and the water turns mily with release air. See what happens if you open a warm or agitated fizzy drink bottled.
I would guess the tap in question is part of the potable water which means it's at mains pressure otherwise the increase in pressure of a pipe coming from the tank in the loft would just push it back up into the tank.
Mily water is actually a sign of a healthy system as it is increased by the following:
The closer you are to the reservoir
The cleaner the pipes to your house/in your house
The higher the water temperature
