Try keeping your bananas in the ` frig- they stay fresher longer and dont taint other fruit.0

do they affect any of the other food in the fridge though?0

I find the only way to stop bananas causing other fruit to become over ripened is to keep them on a banana tree as far away from the other friut as possible.

If you do put your bananas in the fridge, the skin tends to go black, although the fruit inside is normally ok, i would tend to keep the other fruit in the fridge, and the bananas in the bowl!!!0

Try keeping them in a closed plastic bag. They last longer this way - don't go brown so quickly.0

Lol ladygrey, methinks you have too much time on your hands to think about these things. Just eat the bananas - problem solved. :rotfl:

I've always been told that it's bad to put bananas in the fridge - have just done a google search and found this on the BBC site:
As the banana ripens, all that mealy, squishy starch is supposed to turn into sugar. Unfortunately, if the bananas are refrigerated at any time between being picked and being eaten, they will not ripen properly. So don't stick them in the fridge. Imperfectly ripened bananas are composed of starch; but as the natural ripening proceeds, the saccharine material is converted into dextrin and glucose. The best thing to do is to get a paper bag and store them somewhere at room temperature. If you can, find a way to hang the bananas from a hook, you'll avoid bruising the bottoms. When they look ripe enough, stick them in a fridge (again, in a container that protects the bottoms). The skin will blacken, but the fruit will remain at the same ripeness.
Hope this helps.0 -
As it ripens fruit gives off a growth hormone called ethylene which is a gas. This is what causes all the other fruit to ripen. So maybe put it in a different room?0

We eat absolutely tons of bananas each week.
We have a banana fruit bowl on the work top and keep all the other fruit in the fridge.
This way everything keeps fine.0 -
Simple - just stop buying bananas there revolting anyway!
