Yes you can get a refund of part of what you paid, type " road tax refund " in to Google0

Do you still have the disc?0

I'm about to PX my current car for a new one on Friday - it still has 6 months MOT and tax on it and have paid for 12 month tax on new car. Can I just check that I'm entitled to remove the tax disc and claim a refund, even if the car is going from the dealer straight to auction?
Don't want to make a muppet of myself if I waltz off with the disc...0 -

I part-ex'd my car a fortnight ago and did just that - not for the first time!
If you leave the tax disc in the car chances are the garage will send it off and claim the refund themselves!0 -
If you haven't agreed with the garage that you will leave it taxed then the last thing you do when you drive your old car into there is to take out the tax disc and put it in your pocket, go to the post office and get a form (I think it's a V14C) fill it in and send it to the DVLA with the disc for a refund.

Perfect answer - thanks! Nothing mentioned by the dealer so will do just as you suggest.

From the V14 form...You are only entitled to a refund if:
• you are the last previous registered keeper of the vehicle
and you have recently sold or transferred the vehicle.
or
• you are the current registered keeper, that means you have
received a Registration Certificate (V5C) for this vehicle from
DVLA with your name printed on it, and we have been told that:
– the vehicle has been either scrapped, exported, stolen, sold,
transferred, or
– you have made a SORN for the vehicle and the vehicle has
not been taxed within 21 days, or
– you have changed the vehicle’s tax class to a nil value tax
class (such as ‘Disabled’).0 -

the tax disc is of no value to the dealer unless they are going to register the vehicle, then they could claim the tax back.
the rules changed recently, you must be the registereed owner before you can claim tax back. i would take the disc out and get my money back for it....work permit granted!0 -
Picked up the new car today (yah) and the dealer reminded me to remove the tax disc (not that I had forgotten!) which was good.
Thanks for the advice.0 -
We buy the tax off the customer who is p/x ing with us. As when we sell the car on it's usefull to be able to sell the tax on too. Unless we cross a month end, in which case we send the owner a cheque for the cash in value.0
