Mobile phone telesales calls

*!*HIBS*!*

Be warned when accepting mobile deal(s) when these sales people call. Sometimes (as mentioned before) they may not necessarily be the people working directly for the networks. and you may end up with a contract that is longer than you thought or not hearing from these dodgy people after they have taken your details!

Good post.
At the end of my 12 month '3' contract in february I was inundated by people claiming to be from Three, and yet they didn;t know my name or the fatc tht I'd already switched to PAYG.
I spoke to Three in Glasgow about this (I tried calling their bombay office but they just couldn;t grasp what I was trying to say) but eventually they claimed to have nothing to do with passing my telephone number on to dealers/third partires (I'm registered with TPS, opt out of evertything, etc).
I wrote to the Data protection officer outling why I knew they had passed my details on. Within seven days I had a phone call from 'three' again telling me that it was out of their hands....but that they would put a note on my file and contact the dealers who had been calling me (as they didn;t have caller id off so I could see what number they were calling from?!).
Loe and behold....the sound of silence from my phone ever since. Three clearly have very dodgy customer retention practices.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -

Three do seem to suffer the worst when it comes to the amount of companies calling their customers pretending that they are the network. Think someone explained to me once that the reason they can tell you its 3g calling is because they stick '3' in front of the company name or something like that.0

redux wrote:It's nothing to do with 3 - people can get approximate dates for when the number was issued. One of the people calling me about 3 was calling from a Virgin mobile; I don't 3 themselves would do this.
Fairpoint Redux. I guess it could be conincidence that since I wrote to them asking them to confirm to me in writing that they don't pass my details on to partners that my phone has stopped ringing. It could just be that these companies have a small window to hook you up and then they just move on to the next.
But I thought it was 'illegal' for marketing companies to call numbers regsitered with TPS, regardless if they are just guessing expiry dates of contracts. As I said, once I mentioned I'd be going to the TPS about this, the phone calls have stopped.
I strongly suspect that three have nothing to do with this but still have the ability to stop those calls if they wanted to. If I'm registered with TPS, the only persons who could legally call me on that number were three or their partners. the fact they put a note on my file to sstop the calls and they have means that three are still complicit in this activity.
Perhaps that's how they get around the whole Data protection thing.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -

To be fair with three they have struck off dealers passing off to be the network and scamming customers.0 -
Marketing lists are being sold by the networks.
They include mobile numbers, contract commitment dates and tariff info.
I have been offered these lists to buy but i do not cold call.
It may be something for Ofcom to look into when i meet them next month.0 -

Are they sold by the networks themselves, or dodgy members of staff.
I know of at least one case in the news where a network's customer data was sold- turned out it was stolen by staff members.0
