Have just started playing around with microsoft frontpage and want to put a site on the internet.
What is the best place to get a .com or .uk website.
Went to one site and it was only £5 for the site I wanted and remember hearing that Martin paid £100 for this site so was wondering why the difference.
I am looking to have a site similar to https://www.find-dvd.co.uk so a comparison site if that will make my decision any different.
Thanks

ok im in more trouble then you!!
i need to start a website, but havent got a clue how it all works, and where to begin.
its not going to be that big, and wont need anything fancy on it, just text and pictures.
can anybody help please??0 -
It depends what you're going to be hosting. You'll be able to pickup a domain, and basic hosting for quite cheap. Not really my area, but there are plenty of people here that'll make good suggestions.
When you start hosting scripting languages (.Net, PHP, JSP), databases (Sql Server, MySql etc...) and having to pay for large amounts of bandwidth usage it all adds up (£100's a year)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

Try https://www.freewebs.com, fairly simple to get a decent looking site up there in no time. Very easy for beginners as well.0 -
will i be able to create a site like find-dvd.co.uk on thereJust have a little faith0

thanx, but that website looks abit like those geocities websites, im sure you get there name in your domian address?? (might be wrong)
i want to sell a service on my website, so i need a pay pal thing? or credit card payment? thing (sorry i havent got a clue wat the correct terms are!!)
also might need a msg board, similar to this one (thats not a necessity at this stage though)
so i think buying my own domain is the best bet? after that im lost, i need sumbody to create the webpage?? (or an easy program to do it myself) then get sumbody to host it?
i think once the layout is created, i can add what text i need day by day, no problem. its just getting the thing out there!!
cheers0 -
You can get a decent hosting package from https://www.webdockers.com for £20 per year, domains can be bought for around £5 for a year. You could have something like https://www.jassi9.co.uk for example and the package from webdockers lets you install a shop which can accept paypal payments. Forums etc are easily installed as well.
PM me if you want example of shops, forums i have.0 -

Depends what it is you're selling. You can accept payents through various online merchants, but which one depends on your turnover etc.so i think buying my own domain is the best bet? after that im lost, i need sumbody to create the webpage?? Again depends on how simple your site is going to be.
Someone asked the same sort of question a few days ago. They wanted to create an online store 'on the cheap'. As I said to them, cheap usually looks just that...cheap. If you're serious about your business, it's unlikely you can create a good site without any web design knowledge.
Do you know anyone who can design a site for you?
The selling part will also require some programming. If you want to be able to update it yourself regularly, they will need to design some kind of content management, so you don't have edit the HTML, but rather upload changes or make simple updates online. The cost for this kind of job to be done professionally can run into thousands of pounds, but obviously the route you take depends on you and your business.0 -
ok im selling a service, that costs £5 (one off payment) so i think paypal is best
i will only really need to change text daily. i dont know anybody that can creat a website for me, but if lky2k23, has made a page through, microsoft frontpage, then i might be able to get a copy from projectx for free, and do this myself. once i make a webpage in front page, is it a complicated task to upload this page? (im guessing this is done through the web host i choose, the webdockers graham lee suggested sounds good, as it includes paypal)
nickmack, when you said "the selling part requires some programming" could i avoid this if i went with somebody like webdockers, like graham suggested?
also if i created the page through something like frontpage, i would obviously be able to edit and upload as i wanted? (so i wouldnt have to bother with html?)
im guessing the only cheap way to get my website, is to do it myself? through a package like front page. i didnt want to spend a penny more then hosting and domians anyway.
thankyou very much for all your help0 -
webdockers looks interesting, but i cant seem to find the price list!?0

Hi,
Check out 1&1 internet's basic business package. £10.56 pcm inclusive of VAT. This includes a crapload of stuff in with the price, like 3 ".co.uk" domains, the sitebuilder, database backend, dynamic content, 700 email accounts and 1500 aliases (who the heck is going to use 1500 addresses?) the whole list is at http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/HostingBus
I use them for my domain name and DNS services, have had pretty good service considering I only gave them £2.99 for 2 years registration ;-)0
