hire car - Italy

I'm looking for a couple of hire cars (economy with air con) for a week, to be picked up and dropped off at Pisa airport in the not too distant future.

Has anyone got any suggestions for who to go with/avoid?

I have had a fleeting look at prices and they appear to range from £140 to £220 per car.

Your thoughts would be appreciated as I don't have a clue what I'm doing (first time booking a hire car!).

We hired a car from Auto Europa at Bergamo Airport, June 2005. Though we checked over the car thoroughly when we returned it and took pics, a month later over £100 was withdrawn from our credit account with no reason given. It took 5 months of 'nagging' before we found there to be supposedly a small bit of damage to a wing mirror and as we had not reported it that the CDW was void. As for damage the pics suggested otherwise! We finally got the money returned in the 'interests of customer relations'. Ideally, someone from the car hire company should check over the car but in airports it is generally not practical with the car hire office often being well away from where the hire car is parked.

Thansk for the replies. My main concern (being that on reputation alone the Italians are shoddy drivers) is that they'll take extra for damages etc. I know I'll forget something else though.

Thanks for the link by the way!

I've booked from Pisa airport twice. First year carbookers.com were the cheapest, for the 2nd year booking direct from Herz was the same price. I'm booking now for this year, so far carbookers seems cheapest...

When you check out the cars, make sure that all dents are marked on the check out form - we had crosses marked for just about every panel, so I don't know how they could argue for any added scrapes on return. In practice they didn't seem bothered at all about scrapes anyway. You'll notice a large number of bumped cars hiding at the back of the rental car lot..... try and not let it worry you too much!

    thanks for the tips Mark.
  • We flew to Treviso airport last year with Easyjet and booked Herz car hire on the Easyjet site. The queue to pick up the car was as horrendous as the queue to return it - it was the same 'cupboard/office' - as was the queue for problems! The pick up/drop off point was a hike and a half away. There was no local map and the directions were completely usless. Next time we'll use Europa, which had almost no queue, was quick and the cars were parked right outside. In future we won't touch Hertz Italy with a forty foot barge pole with a rubber glove on the end!

    Hi
We just came back from Italy, booked our car with Avis & it cost £68 for the week. We didn't take the extra cover tho.
On the whole the Italians are pretty good drivers ...they are just mad drivers! We found driving ok, just be alert & assertive, but not aggresive.
