Engine 'squeak' noise at start up?

Sideways

Hi all,

Ihave a Skoda Octavia 1.6 Classic 2002 with 54k miles on the clock, hope someone can advise me on this problem..

There is a 'squeaking' noise coming from the engine when I start the engine from cold. It squeaks in rhythm with the engine running and increases in pace when I touch the accelerator.

This noise will then go if I leave the engine running for several minutes or drive for a short distance.

I would take the car to my local garage to get it checked out but by the time I have driven there the noise will have gone completely.

A work colleague suggested a 'belt' problem?

Any ideas folks?

Thanks.

Possibly the fan belt or the water pump

But then again I am talking old style car set ups here and may be talking out of my posterior...lol

Tip..Next time you start from cold lift the bonnet and look/listen to see if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from.Have a look at any belts under the bonnet with the engine off and see if any have a lot of excess play.

Like I say I am talking the old way of doing things (comes from having a company car for 20+ years)

    Good luck

First guess would be a slipping fan belt - they tend to grip once they've warmed up a bit but its worth getting checked out as eventually you could end up with a flat battery (the belt drives the charging system). If its just slipping a bit on starting its probably not that bad although taking a few minutes to settle means that if you only do short journey's you won't ever really get to charging.

As BillTrac says belt or water pump, have the belt replaced first and see if it cures it,if not then it is the pump,if you end up having the pump done then you might as well have the cambelt changed at the same time

not nescesarily, if its a vw engine in this then the water pump can be done without removing the cam belt.

it will either be the water pump belt or alternator belt.

Sounds like the belt. May also make the noise when you are driving at night in the rain with wipers, lights, radio, heater, demister etc going. But then it may not.

Alternator belt most likely candidate. Just after starting the car the battery needs more charge meaning alternator harder to turn which makes the belt slip if it is not at the correct tension.

Check the belt for perishing / damage, if it's OK just tighten it up. On many cars you loosen the bolt holding the alternator to the engine block and lever the alternator in what ever direction is needed to tight the belt and do up the bolt again.
