Scottish Power are taking the P**@ Help Needed!!!
Options
I would be soooo grateful if any1 could give any advice over this.
We are with Scottish Power for gas and electric and we have been with them for about 5 years now and last year, March 2008, I had phone call from them asking me for £76 a month rather than the normal £50 a month I was paying. They told me that if I pay the extra £26 by the end of the year I would be plenty in credit. I was told "lies".
I got my bill at the end of March 2009 and had a poultry £107 where normaly paying £50 a month I would have been £200-£300 in credit. I was so upset I stopped the direct debit and now i've had a letter off them telling me they want £111.50 a month. This is due on 1st May.
For the first 4 years I was happy with them but now I am not happy with them and I wont pay any kind of money like this. We are old aged penioners and I'm pushing 80 and things like this can and will endanger my health and has already! I am going to give them a months notice but they might not accept this because they said I was on cheap gas and electric untill 2010.
Plz help me sort these out!
Thanks
Bernie :T

It's hard to tell from what you say, but I wonder if, like a lot of people, you have used a lot more gas than expected this winter because it has been so cold?
If you are on a fixed tariff, you can give notice and switch - SP cannit stop you unless you owe them money. However, they can charge you a penalty for cancelling early. If you can find a tariff where you will make big savings, it may be worth switching and paying the penalty. However, if your tariff is a good one, it will not be worth you leaving.
I suppose you have missed a month (or two) with your DD and this has put the monthly amount even higher. If you were £107 in credit at the end of March, it would suggest that your DD of £76 was about right. Increasing it to £111.50 seems a bit too high - I would have thought £90 would be OK if you have missed two payments. However, maybe you weren't £107 in credit if you hadn't been charged for all energy used up to that point?0 -
So because you have not kept an eye on your meter you want to switch before 2010 on to a more expensive tariff - or are the alternatives cheaper? The meters are in your home, not in the billing department of the supplier.
Does the paltry £107 include the £250 (£400 next year) winter fuel payment?0 -

Hi bernie47
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I know exactly what is happening with your account and please allow me to confirm.
If you cancelled your monthly Direct Debit then it is likely you have been taken off your original tariff and now placed onto our standard monthly cash plan. This tariff will be more expensive than your previous Direct Debit tariff and this will also contribute to us requesting more money from you.
Your monthly payments increase for two reasons generally:
1. The price of gas and electricity has increased.
2. Your consumption has increased.
If neither of the above have happened and £50 was covering your consumption then £50 would still cover your consumption.
I would recommend the following for you:
1. Contact us with your current meter readings to confirm the exact balance on your account up to date.
2. Request confirmation of how much gas and electricity you are using over 12-months in kWhs.
3. Discuss the cheapest tariff available for you and how much this would require you pay per month to cover future consumption.
4. If there is an outstanding balance on your account agree on a payment arrangement. Either clear this balance in full and start a monthly Direct Debit to cover consumption only or spread the outstanding balance over an agreed period.
5. Once you have information on our best tariff you will then be in a better position to compare prices with other suppliers.
If you want me to look into your account then send me your details and I will confirm all this information for you.
I hope that I have been of assistance for you.
Kind Regards
