Sales of new German cars jumped by almost a quarter

Could this be coming our way?

Sales of new German cars jumped by almost a quarter in February, as a cash bonus for scrapping old cars encouraged consumers to buy new ones.

I would scrap my old car, get the 2k and by another old car for £700. I'd never buy a brand new car no matter what the incentive (unless it was prcticaly free).
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

Germans on the whole buy German built cars
the French on the whole buy French built cars
the Japanese on the whole buy Japanese bult cars

the British on the whole do the same

so such a stimulous would mainly help overseas manufacturers and jobs and not British jobs.

If you could get £2k cash for scrap who is going to sell you a car for £700?

mizzbiz the £2k would only be available when you use the old car in part exchange for a brand new one...

i have heard that some car manufacturers are busy putting their prices up by £1k or £2k in anticipation of this scheme starting here! how ridiculous!

I have a 12 year old car, it runs fine, costs aren't too bad, no interest in getting a new one! I'll replace it when it's really beyond repair... like they used to tell us to do, back in the good old boom days when you could afford to be environmentally friendly!

Indeed so, but British production on the whole is exported (2006 figure was 77% exported) while we Brits tend to buy from abroad.

SMMT Top 10 cars by sales (year to date) and where they're made:

1 Fiesta - Germany and Spain
2 Focus - Germany and Spain
    3 Corsa - Spain
4 Astra - Germany, Belgium, Poland and England (finally)
    5 Golf - Germany
6 207 - France, Spain and Slovakia (although they've probably stopped in the last 2)
    7 A3 - Germany
    8 Insignia - Germany
    9 Mondeo - Belgium
10 Polo - Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia

Using the top ten we're about as important a car producing country as Belgium (if not worse)....

Correct, something like 85% of cars bought in this country are imported.
It would a ludicrous waste of money.
