Basic Bank A/C or Full Bank A/C given

I have a friend who receives over £1000 a month, this money is because they are severely handicapped and receive the highest DLA, and disability rates. To keep things simple they just have a Post Office Card, and pay everything the old fashion way by cash:eek:

Now being a bit cynical because of a decent monthly income, but still unemployed, would they get a full bank account?

Just that I've read if you are on benefits you would only get a basic account, but there again I guess there are benefits and there are benefits!

You can have a full current account, even when you are only on benefits :) He just needs to pick a bank he likes!

Thanks Kavanne, I wasn't sure I thought if your income was benefits only it was a no-no:rolleyes:

Current accounts are normally credit scored and they may not like the idea that you are not working.
Some attach conditions of the level of monthly deposit.

But saying that, my pensioner friend a few years ago opened a HSBC current account BUT he had 20k!!

As the other person said pick the bank you like and see what happens

Nope, to be honest people on benefits (esp DLA HR) get accepted more cos its stability in that the funds are guaranteed. Irish logic but you get my point?

To be on HR DLA you're not going to get better overnight so the banks take this as a good risk..... i'd be looking to try HSBC/Natwest/Barclays for approvals...

By the way, a regular user on SubPrime is on DLA i'll ask him to confirm this for you now..... BRB

edit: add Halifax to that list :-)

Yes you can have a full current account if you are on benefits. I have one with the Halifax and they look on benefits as a stable income. They have even offered me a sizeable overdraft to go with it. I know that if you apply for a current account with HSBC and you are on benefits, you can be offered an overdraft and credit card alongside it.

My mum is on DLA and IB and my dad is on an a pension and DLA and they have a Premier 50 account with A&L with full Visa Debit/cheque cards and a £400 overdraft, and before that they had a Platinum account with Lloyds TSB so they've never had any problems at all getting a full account even though my dad had no credit rating when they opened the LTSB one.

Another yes from me. I was on benefits when i opened an account at Natwest, they gave me a basic cashcard account first then upgraded it once i had been running it well to a full current account with a cheque book, overdraft & credit card. It's a regular income even if it's only benefits.

Thanks for all replies very helpful, I will mention this to my friend as at the moment they store quite a lot of money in their home! Which isn't the best thing to do, also they pay more for utilities etc.
