Free sim and 3,000 free texts when you top up by £5

What's this about?

There is a free Vodafone Sim available which, when you top up by £5, gives 3,000 free texts to any network to use within 30 days.

What do I need to do?

To get the sim, either complete the form at www.vodafone.co.uk/freesim or text the words "Free Sim" to 83669.

Once you've received it, to get the texts you'll have to put it in your mobile (which needs to be unlocked, see below) and top up by £5 or more before midnight 9 April.
From then, you'll have 30 days to use the free texts.

Is this a good deal?

This is a good deal, especially for heavy texters, as PAYG texts commonly cost up to 10p (though there are a number of other ways to get Free Texts). This is obviously a big wodge of texts, but even if you aren't the 100-a-day type, you don't have to use them all.

However, using this sim, the
texts will come from a different number to your usual one, which might be a pain. Plus call costs are pricey, so once the £5 credit is used up avoid using it for calls, as they'll cost 20p/min (You can get these much cheaper on other networks eg. ASDA charges 8p/min). The good news is there's NO requirement to top up any further after the initial £5.

So it's unlikely this is a good long term deal. To help pick the best mobile tariff, read the Cheap Mobiles guide

How to unlock a mobile

This is a sim only deal so you'll need an unlocked handset to access the cheap texts. It's possible to do this for free and it means you can use any network's sim in your handset. For how to do it read the Mobile Unlocking guide.

Why does the website say the texts are unlimited?

As with many of these deals, a fair usage policy applies meaning you're limited to a maximum of 3,000. Yet as you have 30 days in which to use the texts unless you're a VERY prolific texter that shouldn't be a problem!

Are there any restrictions?

- You have to be 16 or over to get the free sim and it's one per household, while stocks last.

- The sim is on the "Simply" price plan meaning calls you make to use up your fiver will be charged at 20p per minute.

You can pay £10 a month and get 500 tests and 100 minutes - per month - they do not get rolled over, but if you are not a massively heavy texter, this works out cheaper than topping up with £10 every couple of weeks on PAYG
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
