A bit of a challenge! Dairy Free Ocean Pie??

Options
Hi all,

I am supposed to stick to a dairy free diet (haha, i manage it most of the time!) and only eat small amounts of chicken and fish. I really really love ocean pie, but its loaded with dairy products!! Does anyone have a recipe for a non dairy version - not asking much i know eh :p

  • I would make a white sauce with soy milk and dairy free marg (vegan) and flour and add a touch of mustard and some chopped parsley. If you poach the fish (smoked and plain) in the milk first it improves the flavour. Add some prawns if you like and top with mashed potato mashed with the soy milk and marg. Heat through to bubbling in the oven.

  • I'm veggie so I'm not 100% sure what exactly goes into an ocean pie (apart from fish!). But, I'm assuming that the fish is in some sort of white sauce. If that's the case can't you just substitute the milk for soya milk (Alpro is good!) and the butter for vegetable/sunflower spread?

My family 'hate' soya milk but I often make hot chocolate or macaroni cheese with it and they don't notice!

What about changing the sauce to a tomato based one? There's plenty of fish pies out there that use a tomato based sauce, I'm sure you'd find a nice one if you do a Google search.

I always use pureed sweetcorn as the sauce instead of a white sauce with fish pie, it's lovely & much more waist-line friendly & a boost torwards your 5-a-day veggies. Just very lightly steam/boil frozen/fresh sweetcorn (don't need to if using tinned) then pop in a blender until smooth. If a bit thick water down as required. Add pepper/parsley to taste.

I make a non-dairy fish pie. Pretty basic really but quite tasty. I make the white sauce from non-dairy Pure margarine and rice milk. I find rice milk really good in white sauces/custards. It looks slightly opaque but really quite palatable - and it never goes lumpy!!
  • I have an OH with a weird neurological problem (orig thought to be MS, but that's another story) who can't eat dairy, and I can't eat soy. Sounds a bit like Jack Sprat, doesn't it! Anyway, I've found that all the white sauce type things can be made perfectly well with WATER and flour. If you're making a fish pie, use the fish broth to make a white sauce as if it were milk. i.e....

Fry the flour in olive oil
Add broth bit by bit to make white sauce

If you find this too dull you can always spice it up with boullion, or make a non-dairy mushroom sauce (still with fish broth for fish pie), or leek sauce, or onion sauce. Some of these come out non-fish-pie coloured, though (the mushroom one is brownish, for example).

Or (sudden inspiration) you could cheat by using a tinned fish soup as your liquid....not very OS though!

PS I also make a DELICIOUS 'Chicken in off-white sauce'. Day 1 - roast a chicken on a rack, and save the juices that run off and refrigerate. Day 2 - take the fat off the resulting juices, and use the stock as a basis for white sauce (with flour) for the remaining chicken. Add peas and serve. Delish!! :D
