in Credit cards
Hi,
I would appreciate your advice on my problem.
Before I became a moneysaver I used the AA for car breakdown recovery. I was a "member" for over five years and the last period expired on January 25 2006. I decided not to renew, not really just becasue of moneysaving but because I got a company car on Jan 1 which is fully expensed so did not need any personal cover.
The renewal documents came from AA and I returned them with a letter saying I did not want to renew. AA dispute that they have received them and that is a separate issue which I dealing with. (Today I have written to their Chief Executive - their customer service is appalling).
I discovered that the membership had not been cancelled when i checked my credit card statement and found that AA had entered a payment of £136!
This credit card is A&L MBNA and I have spoken to them about this but they say that they cannot help because there is a continuous authority to pay AA which i can't cancel!
Last Spring I had a problem with my A&L credit card. My account number was "stolen" and used for internet gambling. At this time MBNA dealt with the issue in an exemplary manner, my card was cancelled and the amounts were refunded straight away. A&L/MBNA gave me a new card and a new card number. Now the thing is, the card number that AA had was the old card number, the one that had been cancelled, so surely the payment request should have been refused by A&L?
Has anyone else had a similar problem? How did you resolve it? As I said i am already disputing with AA because I sent them their docs back and they should have cancelled the membership but I have not met with any success and as I said earlier have had to write to the Chief Exec. Is it worth trying to pursue this with MBNA?
Sorry if this is a bit of a long post - hope you guys have some ideas.
Thanks

There is a thread (a couple of threads above this one) entitled "Regular payments off a credit card discussion".
It's 8 pages long, but should answer most (all?) of your questions.
EDIT: Here's a clickable link that'll take you straight to it...

Afraid not. It is quite simple You signed a continuous card authority with the AA.
The only people who can stop payment is the AA.
This is the main reason why I would NEVER ever give any company a continuous authority on any of my credit cards.0 -

However, and despite the fact I've never personally had any problems, I'd never put a CPA on one of my short-term 'use and abuse' credit cards.0 -

You have never had any problems - good. Try cancelling the payment!0 -

I've cancelled/re-instated AA/RAC cover in alternate years, postponed RAC membership when I got free 'vehicle' cover with my current car, and alternated between Hastings Direct & Churchill for my car insurance over the last 4-5 years...and all were problem-free.
I'm happy to have these particular CPA's on my 'bank issued' credit card because I check the account daily (and especially at renewal time), and would spot a 'rogue' posting immediately.
As I said before, I'd never put a CPA on a card that I had no intention of keeping.0 -
One possible way of stopping a forgotten CPA is to tell the CC isuer it is a disputed payment?
Y.B., Surely it is safer to make CPA on cards you are likely ditch, as the CPA will get ditched too, or have I missed something again ?

I had this once with the AA and they refused to cancel the membership and give a pro rata refund.
Terrible customer service, but good on the road service.Nice to save.0
