Tesco Shopping Bags
Hi
I'm looking at trying some upside down Tomatos and i have been considering a variety of methods and things i could use when i thought of a use for my old Tesco shopping bags.
Do you think they would be strong enough? Or maybe i could double them up, one inside another.
I'm onto something here, i've found a use for all those plastic bags.
Wonder if there's money in it?

I think your barking Bratters!!! :rotfl:
The bags are way to thin to be any good, maybe if you used the bags for life. Otherwise your toms will be all over the floor!

I hadn't heard of upside down tomatoes, so googled and found this link:

Don't the tomatoes start growing upwards after a while (ie do a u-turn midgrowth?)
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Yes they do. They row like a u-bend. They still grow toms though.
I found the issue with this method was retaining moisture when you water them.0 -
I found the issue to be the wind blowing the tomato about and breaking the stem, they need to be in a really sheltered spot.
Oh and having tried it once, I won't be bothering again. Plastic bags, total non starter, you need a bucket and somewhere very strong to hang it off.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Thanks for that advice lotus eater i shall bow to your superior knowledge.
The bags are going to have to be recycled in another way then.
I've seen the toms grown from 2 litre plastic bottles so i might give that a go instead. It seems the best way to stop the dog eating the things and i'm fortunate in the respect that they will be under cover.0 -
The normal tesco bags also break down when exposed to sunlight - so you may have got half way through the season only to find the bags disintegrating and your toms on the floor. Ooops! All I seem to hear is blah blah blah!0
