is there a way to keep your whites bright without buying the commercial products to do so. I use to use something called glow white i think but if i can do with a homemade alternative then that would be great

I use Napisan in my whites, its cheaper than the usual brightening products and i think its better. You will find it on the washing powder aisle and its about £1.80 for a box. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. There are quite a number of threads listed under "laundry" in the cleaning section of the MEGA Index sticky on Old Style.
There are also some useful tips on the Ave Zillions on Cleaning Collection.
You can find these via my signature any time you see it or...
..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. You need some "Dolly Blue" but I don't now where to buy it, it is still made and sold for the Caribbean market so it might be available in some ethnic shops. (Giving my age away here)
