Am I insured?

Hi,

Would appreciate help on the following....

I'm fully comp on my van which I drive every day, although I need to borrow my mum's car to drive to Portsmouth ( 2hrs away ), she is fully comp and has my dad as a named driver on it. Can I drive her car with just her consent or does she have to notify the insurers etc? Or do I notify my insurers?
Please help

  • You need to see if your insurance covers you to drive other cars. It used to be a common feature of fully comp insurance that you could drive someone elses car 3rd party. A lot of companies have withdrawn it now so have a look at your cover note.

Alternatively she can probably add you onto her policy for a small fee then you will be covered fully comp!
  • as above, on my current policy i can drive other cars 3rd party with permission, but my previous one it was only in emergencies

why not just take the van?

Why not get your Mum to add you as a named driver on her insurance?, that way you will get full and the same cover as she has.

Or google "day insurance" to make sure you're fully covered. That way if something happens it doesn't affect either policy.

If your Van is insured on a Commercial Vehicle Policy then you will not have "driving other cars cover" If your van is insured on a private car policy which is unlikely you probably have "driving other cars cover" You should check with your Insurers.

If you do have driving other cars cover it only covers damage the car you are driving does to other people and other peoples property. There is no theft, fire or damage cover.

The best option is to add yourself to your parents policy which will probably cost between £10 and £25. You may find it will cost you the same to add yourself to their policy permanently.
