Built in bed help!

I'm hoping to get rid of a cupboard in my box bedroom. The bottom of the cupboard is the bit that sticks out from the stairs being underneath. Hope you get what I mean I'm hopeless at DIY
Anyhow I want to change it from a cupboard to a kind of built in bed. This would mean the box bit being the top end of the bed (like where the pillows go) & then the rest being built in with say drawers or cupboards underneath. Trouble is I need to find a joiner who could design something really nice. I don't know where to start looking, or have any idea how much it would cost
Any help would be much appreciated.

My old bedroom at my parents was exactly like this and cos I was fed-up of lack of space I came up with the same idea. My dad found a carpenter to do it - it didnt cost much. Basically it was a mattress shaped box made of MDF that sat on top of the stair bit (screwed in) and then was supported at other end by timber posts screwed to the wall. The mattress sat inside it. We bought a chest of drawers from MFI to fit in the gap underneath.
I cant imagine a carpenter would find this difficult to do if you explained to them what you want.0 -
any chippy could do this sort of thing.
my BIL (not a chippy) did his own built in bed for the kids. he made a great job of it too.Get some gorm.0 -
We did a similar thing. We bought a bed base and slats from ikea, bought legs (from their tables range) we put the top of the bed on the 'box' (top of the stairs) and adjusted the legs to fit at the bottom. It's very stable and could be improved or modified if you wish, but it was the cheapest and easiest way for us.0

Thanks for the tips  you've given me some great ideas. I was guessing that other people have done this sort of thing but couldn't find anything about it anywhere. Our box room is dominated by this huge cupboard, I can see why they originally did it, but it doesnt half take away your space!0
