I always used to buy a separate laundry soap powder and fabric conditioner - then times got hard and I used a combined. Then times got REALLY hard and I was looking for further pennies to pinch.
On the reckoning that I'd give anything a go once, I picked up a small box of Asda's value (cheap as chips) biological soap powder and, with much trepidation, gave it a go.
Bear in mind that I wash everything on a 40 degree wash.
Granted, on very muddy socks or towels which have been used for dog paws, you might need to pre-wash, or wash them twice .. but for most regular laundry, it seems to be doing the job! Instead of fabric conditioner, I use ten or so drops of a YlangYlang Essential Oil (Asda were selling them off cheaply at 10p each, so I bought the lot, knowing that I'd use them in one way or another) and this strange and unlikely combination seems to be doing the trick.
I worry a bit about the detergent side of things, what with DH suffering with Psoriasis, but so far ... ~touches wood~ ... we seem to be okay, with no ill effects being reported.
So, does anybody else use the stuff?

If you add washing soda to your powder - you'll find it stretches even further and probably cleans better too. A lot of people on here mix soda with their chosen powder and in fact if they like a particular scent they mix value powder with their chosen powder then add soda, in 1/3 amounts. Add vinegar to your fabric conditioner tray (with EO's if you want) and bob's your uncle
FYI - when I made my own fabric conditioner with vinegar and bicarb - I only added about 4-5 drops to the litre, so you can save on your EO's - you probably don't need anything like 10 drops per load.

I use Tescos value powder, and i have been using a decent fabric conditioner, but i am going to try vinegar once ive run out of the conditioner im using at the moment. Ive never had a problem with the cheap washing powder, and i have really sensitive skin!!! Will be interesting to see what happens when i try the vinegar, but lots of people have recomended it, so worth a try!!!!0

Thanks for that! I wouldn't have had a clue what to do with washing soda, so wouldn't ever have considered it.
As for the EO's, the ten drops is a bit of a moveable feast ... some things get less, the ten is usually for dog blankets and heavy things that need a bit more deodorising!
My son has a bit of a thing about vinegar - so I'm not sure how we'd get on with that .. but if I don't tell him, he won't know, so I'll give it a go!What kind of vinegar do you use? I imagine its the clear stuff as opposed to the malt!

I only use Tesco Value washing powder, i havent use fabric conditioner since i bought a new washer 12 months ago, as i was disgusted at the state of the fabric conditioner drawer. I cleaned it every so often, but of course you cant clean the pipes inside the washer. I also think it helps if you put the washing powder straight into the drum. That way you know all the washing powder is being used in the wash, rather than gumming up the pipes from the drawer to the drum.
I sometimes use white vinegar in the final rinse though to soften the washed clothes. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi, hope you don't mind if I join in this thread but this really interests me.
I'm in the process of trying to do some things OS but I have a long way to go!
At the moment I use Persil Colour Tablets and Persil White Tablets, combined with Comfort fabric softener. I've always been wary of using the cheaper brand of washing stuff as I guess I'm guilty of being a "brand name snob" to some degree. However finances don't allow me that luxury and I'm trying to cut down on things. I'm definitely going to try some of the other cheaper ones now as I could save a fortune I think :T :T :T
I never even knew you could use vinegar in your wash - can't believe how much I have learned since I found this site, so thanks again0 -

Since starting our MSE'ing I have switched to tesco value powder and conditioner....however recently some of our clothers especially darrks and stronger cplours seem to have either a white residue or they are fading. I am only using about 2/3rds of a fromage frais pot per load. Is this too much?? I have rewashed one black jumper three times to see if it will remove the excess residue but it still looks the same, and feels like it is excess residue??????
Anyone got any ideas?Trying to tidy and clean while the kids are still growing, is like trying to clear snow even though it's still snowing

I had the same thing and so did my daughter in law. Also the powder seems to lump in the dispenser.
I haven't been able to remove any of the marks and have changed back to Surf or Bold depending which is on offer. The curve that can set a lot of things straight is a smile0 -
