Easywarm (Swalec)for over 50's ends next week
I've just signed up for the Easywarm offer from Swalec at the moment you have to be over fifty to sign up,but from what I was told it goes up to over sixty year olds as from next week.the deal looks pretty good at the moment as my monthly direct debit for electric was £42 and my gas £33.50 so total £75.50 , my new payment will be £57 so a saving of £220 per year for unmetered use,not that I'm going to leave everthing on just to get my monies worth . It's based on number of bedrooms and how many people live at the premises and as long as one is over fifty.
Although I was a bit upset as when the guy from Swalec called on me he quoted £51 per month and when I called Swalec to get more details and make an appointment I was quoted £42 per month I asked him to check it several times and he said no it's definately £42. When the same rep I spoke to the first time came back for the appointment he then told me it had just gone up and it's now £57 , not as good as the two previous prices but still a good saving ,I hope.
Unfortunately Swalec do not post the Easywarm offer on the Swalec Website you have to call them on 0800 316 2191 (But Hurry You only Have a Few Days Left )

Yes,
But be aware that even though Swalec are part of the SSE group, Easywarm is ONLY available in Wales. They don't do it in their other companies areas.0 -
Yes, thats why I put Swalec in the thread title and mentioned the Swalec website, and gave the Cardiff freephone number
Anyway I thought I had a good deal and would pass it on to the people in the Swalec area. :grouphug: So for all the people that don't live in the Swalec area I'm deeply sorry for wasting your time0 -
Unfortunately, as you mentioned above, Swalec have also put the prices up on Easywarm from 1'st of Feb 2006.
I've now received my price increase letter so I know what the damage is.
Previously the Easywarm prices were discussed in the Staywarm thread (thread 72534, post 32 etc.) but it seems more sensible to put them here now.
So, for example:
3 bedroom 2 people now £65 per month (had been £58 per month before).
3 bedroom 3 people now £71 per month.
2 bedroom 2 people now £57 per month.
They have also taken the opportunity to reduce the maximum usage allowances, e.g. for 2 people and 3 bedrooms on dual fuel the maximum is now 34,750 Kwh of gas and 6.500 Kwh of electricity, or on single fuel the maximum is now 24,500 kwh of electricity.
For those unfamiliar with Easywarm it is Swalec's version of Staywarm (unmetered fixed monthly price for the 'elderly') and as discussed above is only available in South Wales.
Unfortunately Easywarm prices are not fixed for 12 month periods like Staywarm are.
Even with the increase they are still a little bit cheaper than Powergen Staywarm.
The significant cut in the maximum usage allowance is a bit worrying. I'll find out in due course what happens when you exceed it.0 -
If you use close to the maximum allowance that is a remarkable bargain - several hundred pounds cheaper than 'normal' tariffs.0

I presume that once winter is past, one would swap suppliers to stop paying the company a guaranteed monthly amount, as you are using less electricity and/or gas?

I suppose one could swap out during summer, but then they might not let you swap back in again for next winter.
The idea is to spread the high winter cost throughout the whole year with fixed payments.
As Cardew said it is still a good deal for high usage people. Unfortunately, being all electric heating (no gas in this area) we use massive amounts of electricity and the bill on the regular tariff, averaged over a full year, would be even higher.0 -
Easywarm is a good scheme but the revised (reduced) usage limits are a bit tight. It was originally sold to me as a "use as much as you want" for a fixed price but it is nothing of the sort.
What I would like to know is what happens if I exceed the gas limit but fall short on electricity as is likely to be the case with us. Does Swalec offset the two against each other, or will they take me off the scheme if I marginally exceed the gas limit but fall well short on electricity. Perhaps I will have to reduce my gas comsumption and use electric fires for a while! Won't be the same as having the central heating on, but I would like to stay on the scheme next year as it is fair value.
Or did Swalec introduce the scheme as a sprat to catch a mackerel, collecting a host of new customers only to transfer them to their standard tarrif later?0 -
Interesting question. I suspect that it's just that they can do it because of the large number of people signing up and they don't mind if some drop out.
Some figures in the maximum usage table are a bit odd. For example they allow 3 bedroom houses to use 4,250 Kwh more gas than 2 bedroom houses, yet they allow 4 bedroom houses to use 8,000 Kwh more gas than 3 bedroom houses and they allow 2 bedroom houses to use 7,750 Kwh more gas than 1 bedroom houses.0 -
Looking through the papers I received when I signed on to Easywarm in May 2005, I have no evidence of any usage limits at all. Does anyone have the previous limits, if any? Being a new scheme it may be only now in the light of experience that they are in fact setting limits. In any event it would be unfair and I suppose unethical (do they care!) to reduce lower limits during the year as customers would not have the opportunity of reviewing/reducing usage in time to make a difference before their year end (which obviously varies from person to person depending on the joining date), and could be construed as a breach of contract. Perhaps the new limits will apply to the next full year.
I will be writing to them shortly for clarification and will post the outcome here.0 -
Paragraph 3.1c of the August 2004 T&C says max 35,000 Kwh gas consumption and max 35,000 Kwh electricity consumption.
No differentiation for property size or number of occupants and no separate figures mentioned for single fuel customers.
I am expecting the new limits to apply for the 1'st Feb 2006 to 1'st Feb 2007 year (they certainly couldn't apply for before then). So taking one's own meter reading now is definitely a good idea.0
