Wings of Ambition's £10 Challenge Diary

Options
Hey all,

I recently decided to take up one of the forum's challenges, and thought jenjade's £10 challenge sounded like a fun one. I must admit I haven't been a regular on the DFW board, but some of you may recognise my username from other boards.

The challenge, in short, is to start with £10 and to make as much as you can from that £10 in 6 months. The challenge started on 1st Jan 09, and will run until 1st July. I'm tempted to run my challenge for a year, and I have good reason: never one to sell myself short, I've given myself a target.... of £1 million . Yes, I realise that I'm almost certainly doomed to failure, and that I'll probably put a lot of work into getting to that point of failure, but hey.... might as well aim for the stars!

Throughout the year, I aim to try several different NEW ways of making money. I have a good brain and I think that matched betting is something I could really get into. I'd also love to try my hand at a bit of inventing (no that's not a typo for investing, although I may try that too), and wouldn't mind starting up a small business as well. Who knows - maybe with all of that, my target isn't necessarily 100% unachievable (just 99.9997%)!

I'm quite keen on the idea of a diary for a couple of reasons. First is the support that would come from you guys... doing something on your own can be very frustrating and lonely at times, and I dearly love the MSE community, so it's great to know there are other people in this with me. It's also nice to be able to share my ideas and successes (and failures) with you so everyone knows the best things to try. I also think that if I get anywhere near achieving my target, it would be amazing to have a diary to gawp at in years to come!!!

So.... the challenge is underway and I shall update every now and again. Best of luck to all those undertaking it with me.... let's make this a raging success :D

  • Well here's the first update... not doing too badly.

On 3rd Jan, I popped into one of the closing Woolies stores (Wembley High Road) and bought a stack of CDs. It was 5 copies of the same album, at 99p each. I also bought a McFly album for 99p, amongst other things. Listed them on eBay when I got home. I realise that some people seem to disapprove of buying from Woolies to sell on eBay, but tbh it doesn't bother me! I'm trading just like any shop you ever buy from.

The 5 albums went on a Buy-It-Now listing, all of which sold quite quickly for either £5.49 or £5.99. I checked a completed listing for the McFly album and a previous copy had sold for £31!!! So that's gone on a week-long auction.

The 5 albums sold for a total of £28.45. I had to pay £2.73 in ebay fees, £1.97 in PayPal fees and £3.26 on postage. Tallying that all up, and including the McFly album, my current total has gone from £10 to:
    £24.53
I'm quite happy with that, having more than doubled my money within the first week. The McFly album isn't doing too badly either, and has several watchers, so I hope I do well with that.

I still have quite a bit to list on eBay, although lots was bought before the challenge started, so I can't count that. Might scour a few charity shops in the next few days for some bargains.

    Until next time....
